Introduction

The Department of Physics at the UAB together with a series of research institutes in the UAB Esfera promotes the PhD programme in Physics, which aims to train researchers to be able to start and complete a satisfactory original, innovative and quality piece of research when culminates in the public presentation of the PhD thesis.

The research topics on the PhD programme in Physics embrace almost all the disciplines of physics: high energy physics, elementary particles, astrophysics, cosmology, quantum mechanics, quantum information, applied optics, materials science and technology, nanoscience, electromagnetism, superconductivity, statistical physics, non-linear dynamics, physics of radiation and environmental physics.

Candidate profile

The PhD student profile corresponds to students who have taken one of the following master's degrees (or related master's degrees). Official Master's Degree in Photonics; Official Master's Degree in High-Energy Physics, Astrophysics and Cosmology; Official Master's Degree in Generation and Application of Synchrotron Radiation; Official Master's Degree in Modelling for Science and Engineering, and Official Master's Degree in Nanotechnology and Material Science.

Professional opportunities

This PhD programme provides the following principal career options:

  • Research work at university or in research institutes: both fundamental and applied.
  • Research and Development departments in companies in any area of physics.
  • Entrepreneurship in high-technology sectors.
  • Research in public or private centres.
  • Teaching physics at secondary or university level.

Objectives and justification

The PhD programme in Physics aims to prepare researchers to be able to start and complete a satisfactory original, innovative and quality piece of research. This research takes the form of a doctoral thesis. In addition, researchers should be able to demonstrate deep knowledge of the subject of their research, capacity to synthesise and interpret information and knowledge of the main debates and most recent scientific contributions, especially within their research area.
