Introduction

The PhD in Economic Analysis (IDEA) is a highly competitive programme. Different international rankings place the programme among the best European doctorates. The lecturing staff are mainly members of the Unit for Fundamental Economic Analysis of the Department of Economic History at the UAB and the Institute for Economic Analysis of the CSIC, one of the most important research groups in economics in Europe. It also has the participation of researchers and teaching staff of international prestige who are regularly invited to part of the teaching and research team.

The IDEA positively supports mobility, accepting students from anywhere in the world. Currently, more than 70% of students on this PhD programme are from abroad.

The programme's success can be seen in the variety and quality of centres in which its graduates find work. 100% of IDEA PhDs occupy positions in institutions such as Rice University, Auckland University, University College London, Maastricht University, Padova University, Pompeu Fabra University, Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, Alicante University, Central European Bank, Bank of Spain, OCDE, ONU, etc.

Candidate profile

PhD students must have recognised research experience, through knowledge of the basic concepts and tools of economics and the capacity to assimilate new knowledge, as well as fluency in English (the working language of the programme).

This programme offers the opportunity to practise as a teacher or researcher in an international university in the field of economics or work in the private sectors in posts requiring high analytical skills.

 

Objectives and justification

The objectives of the PhD programme in Economic Analysis is top prepare students to be able to start and complete a complex, original and innovative research project. This research will result in the production of a doctoral thesis in the areas of economic theory, applied economics and economic analysis techniques. In addition, one of the objectives of the programme is knowledge transfer to areas outside the academic sector.

The PhD in Economic Analysis is one of the reference programmes in doctoral studies at the Barcelona Graduate School of Economics. The IDEA offers highly analytical and quantitative knowledge that enables students to carry out leading research in the areas of economic theory and applied economics.

The design of the programme is based on factors such as the international profiles of lecturers and students, demanding admission requirements, continual evaluation and access to an international and competitive jobs market. This market also receives students from some of the most prestigious PhD programmes in the work, which only goes to support the quality of this programme.

The programme is internationally focused in terms of both students and lecturers and takes part in doctoral programme networks in economics ENTER (European Network for Training in Economic Research).

Research infrastructure

Besides the physical resources for teaching and research that the UAB provides for all its PhD programmes, students on this programme can also make use of the following research infrastructures:

  • A computer room.
  • Study rooms with individual desks, shelves and lockers.
  • An annual photocopy allowance.
  • Computer support.
  • Access to large data bases (CPS, PSID, etc).
  • All the services offered by the Institute of Economic Analysis and those offered by the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and the Barcelona GSE to its students.

Student also form part of research projects that can provide financial support for attendance at conferences related to their area of research.

The PhD programme also offers students resources for access to the employment market, including funding.
