PhD in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Biomedicine
Biochemistry and molecular biology form an essential part of basic training for professionals working in many widely-differing fields, all related to molecular-level biological systems, and they also form a very productive area of scientific and technical development, with important applications in different areas of great social impact. The application of basic science to medicine is currently needed for furthering knowledge, diagnosis and treatment of human diseases. Thus, biomedicine is intimately related to biochemistry and molecular biology. In this field there is a great need for innovative approaches.
This PhD programme is the successor to the PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, a pioneer in its field, and which obtained the Quality Award of the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation (MICINN). Likewise, this programme is integrated in the official postgraduate programme in Bioscience, which has also received the MICINN's Quality Award. The PhD programme Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Biomedicine focuses on the training of researchers, placing particular emphasis on research methodology and techniques, and leading up to the doctoral thesis. It aims to encourage diversity of approach and a balance between basic and applied research, thus making possible a rich intellectual atmosphere, a necessary condition for doctoral research of quality. These studies lead to a Doctorate.
The ideal profile for a PhD student on this programme is that of a graduate in Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Biology, Biomedical Sciences, Genetics, Microbiology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Pharmacy, Medicine, or with similar qualifications in science or in the health sciences, who also has an official master's degree in the field of biochemistry, molecular biology and biomedicine.
Students are expected to have a great hunger for knowledge, imagination and creativity, motivation to succeed, foreign-language skills, an ability to work in multidisciplinary research teams and a willingness to carry out research stays abroad.
Students who obtain their PhD on this programme can pursue a scientific, academic or professional career, joining research centres, universities, hospitals or scientific research and development companies, both national and international. Their professional activity can be in the field of biochemistry, molecular biology, biomedicine, biotechnology, the pharmaceutical industry or food technology, among others.
Objectives and justification
The PhD programme in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Biomedicine aims to equip its students with the skills needed for conducting research in the different branches of molecular biology. Students are therefore encouraged to join a research group as a trainee researcher, and are taught methods and techniques for researching and writing a doctoral thesis.
