Introduction

The Department of Paediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynaecology and Preventative Medicine at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona has for many years offered a large range of undergraduate and graduate courses.

With the introduction of new legal provisions and the aim of gaining coherence and competitivity in 2015 is has been agreed to split what was previously a single programme into two: Biomedical Research Methodology and Public Health, and Paediatrics, Obstetric & Gynaecology.

The new PhD programme in Biomedical Research Methodology and Public Health aims to promote the more methodological side of doctoral studies, based on the disciplines of biostatistics and epidemiology, their application the health of the population (public health, community health, international health, etc.) and the population experiencing health problems (clinical epidemiology, health systems research, evaluation of healthcare quality, etc.).

The programme is therefore aimed at graduates in one of the health science disciplines who want to gain more profound knowledge in some particular area of interest or specialisation from a point of maximum methodological solvency: etiology, diagnoses, prognostics, therapy, management, preventative medicine and public health among others.

Candidate profile

The specific requirements of the programme aim to establish a PhD student profile that maximises the chances of success on the programme. The student profile is that of someone wishing to build a career in biomedical research methodology and public health or in the health sciences in general, and to take a leading role in transferring knowledge to society.

Students on the programme should have a bachelor's degree in a discipline related to the health sciences. They should also have a medical specialisation, have successfully completed at least the first two years of specialist training in a MIR programme, have an official master's degree that is in keeping with this programme's lines of research, or have obtained the research proficiency component in PhD programmes prior to RD393/2007.

Professional opportunities

PhD graduates from this programme will find most work opportunities in the various services of hospitals, primary healthcare centres, and social and health centres; applied research institutes; healthcare planning and evaluation bodies; public healthcare agencies; private healthcare companies; international organisations.

Objectives and justification

The PhD programme in Biomedical Research Methodology and Public Health aims to promote the more methodological side of doctoral studies, based on the disciplines of biostatistics and epidemiology, their application the health of the population (public health, community health, international health, etc.) and the population experiencing health problems (clinical epidemiology, health systems research, evaluation of healthcare quality, etc.).

The programme is therefore aimed at graduates in one of the health science disciplines who want to gain more profound knowledge in some particular area of interest or specialisation from a point of maximum methodological solvency: etiology, diagnoses, prognostics, therapy, management, preventative medicine and public health among others.

Research infrastructure

Besides the physical resources for teaching and research that the UAB provides for all its PhD programmes, students on this programme can also make use of the following research infrastructures.

The programme's activities can be carried out at the facilities of all five teaching units belonging to the Faculty of Medicine, and also at the Epidemiology, Public Health, Preventive Medicine or Statistics services in the UAB's teaching hospitals and associated research institutes. These provide all the necessary classrooms, spaces for workshops, seminars or lectures, computer rooms, libraries, etc. ICT equipment (computers, office and statistical software, wi-fi, etc.) is also widely available.
