Projects and research
Research has been fundamental in the trajectory of the Equality and Diversity Service. Since its creation in 2006 as an Observatory for Equality, we have participated in different research funded by state and regional entities, as well as in two European projects.
European projects
The UAB participated, through the Equality and Diversity Service (formerly the Observatory for Equality) in the project "EGERA- Effective Gender Equality in Research and in Academia" (2014-2017) funded by the European Commission within the framework of the FP7 programme. The UAB was the main partner of this project and responsible for the work package: "Strengthening the gender perspective in research". The project was led by Sciences Po (France) and involved a total of eight European universities and research centres.

What is EGERA?
A total of eight European universities participated in the EGERA project: the UAB, the University of Anvers (UA) in Belgium, the Radboud University (RU) in the Netherlands, the University of Vechta in Germany, the Middle East Technical University of Ankara (METU) in Turkey, the Research Centre for Global Change (Czech Globe) in the Czech Republic and the Centre for Sociological Research and Social Intervention (CESIS) of Portugal.
Objective
The purpose of the EGERA project was to achieve gender equality in the academic world and strengthen the gender dimension in research, working from five axes organized in work packages:
-
Analysis of structural inequality indicators
-
Promotion of gender-friendly work and educational environments
-
Gender training for the university community
-
Transforming governance models
-
Strengthening gender in research and scientific content
The role of the Service
The Equality and Diversity Service was responsible for strengthening gender in research and scientific content. Over the four years, we prepared: a critical report on European Commission instruments to incorporate the gender perspective in research, support guides to train project managers and managers and research staff in training, and finally, a database of good practices in gender and research that will be made available to the entire scientific community.

Measures for Social Inclusion and Equity in Higher Education Institutions in Latin America, 2012-2014
The Equality and Diversity Service (at that time the Observatory for Equality) participated in the project "Measures for Social Inclusion and Equity in Higher Education Institutions in Latin America (MISEAL)", research co-funded by the European Union within the framework of the ALFA III programme.
The project, led by the Freie Universität Berlin (Germany), had fifteen partners from various universities in Latin America and Europe.
The general objective of MISEAL was to contribute to improving access strategies and mechanisms, as well as the conditions of permanence and mobility of people belonging to disadvantaged or vulnerable groups in twelve IES in Latin America. The specific contribution of the Service, in coordination with the University of Hull in England, consisted of the development of a comprehensive system for the evaluation and monitoring of the actions carried out within the framework of the project.
On the other hand, the Service was the partner entity in charge of organizing the closing congress of MISEAL, "New challenges for social inclusion and equity in higher education". About 150 people from different Latin American and European countries participated in the congress, 42 papers were presented and spaces were created for reflection around the paradigm of intersectionality in the analysis of inequalities and the development of policies and practices in higher education from a transnational perspective.
Among others, the MISEAL project resulted in the establishment of an exchange and consultation network between European and Latin American universities, the creation of a transnational postgraduate programme, a database of experts and a transnational Observatory.
