Títol: Cuirizando la cuestión trans. Sobre la corporalidad transfemmenina. Marikonizando. Bollerizando. Feminizando. Materializando.
Autoria: Carmen Joa Peralbo Bruno

Autoria: Idaira Tato Bernalt

Living Under Violence: Shining a Light on Women’s Homelessness with a Gender Perspective
Author: Carla Canceller Lladó
Degree: Social Education
Abstract: This project is a journey investigating how chauvinist violences, especially those that take place in domestic and institutional spheres, affect women’s experiences of homelessness. Its purpose is to raise awareness of the women who are experiencing homelessness yet are invisible, as different circumstances that they might suffer while homeless are not kept in mind. To do this, it delves into the existing literature about chauvinist violences, the homelessness phenomenon and the interference of Social Education in the homelessness field in Barcelona. Then, the results of the interviews carried out as field work through a qualitative methodology are exposed, as well as the conclusions that can be extrapolated from them and their discussion.

(Un)inhabitable Minds: Experiences of Transgender and Gender Non-Conforming Individuals as Users of Mental Healthcare Services in Barcelona
Author: Anna López Rodríguez
Degree: Sociology
Abstract: Gender is a powerful determining factor of health, especially for transgender and gender non-conforming people, who have a higher risk of suffering mental health problems than the cisgender population and the rest of the LGBTQ+ community. From a biopsychosocial perspective, a feminist epistemology applied to sociology, a de-colonial gender perspective and a de-pathologising perspective of trans identities, this research project intends to act as a loudspeaker, through semi-scripted life history interviews of the experience of transgender and gender non-conforming people as users of mental healthcare services in Barcelona.
The Red Seed of Catalan Feminism: The Political Thinking of Giulia Adinolfi
Author: Marta Roman Martos
Degree: Political Science
Abstract: This essay analyses the feminist political thinking of Giulia Adinolfi. This text analyses the idea that feminism, as a mass movement, demonstrates the hegemonic nature of the interests of the working classes. Adinolfi questioned the dominant ideas of orthodox Marxism and considered that feminism and the working-class struggle should form a united front. For this reason, her thinking was characterised by providing a stance on the feminist struggle that diverged from the generalized concept of Catalan feminism of the late 20th century.
Content Creation in the World of Video games. From Leisure to Work: A Gender Perspective
Author: Paula Osorio Recorda

Abstract: Content creation in the world of video games is increasingly becoming a career choice for many young people. This research is an exploratory study to examine the reasons behind the relative lack of women content creators in the field of video games and the factors that explain this phenomenon—which are relevant given that those who reach the summit become referents for different generations. This study has been carried out on the basis of a mixed methodology, which includes both interviews with content creators and a self-made survey of women between the ages of 12–45, which has shown that there is a gender gap separating women from the world of video games.

Giantesses, Complements to Giants?: The Giant Act from a Social and Gender Perspective
Author: David Caelles Fernández
Degree: Humanities
Abstract: The giant act brings a historical view of the gender representation in popular Catalan culture, as it originated in the 15th century and has become an ingrained tradition in contemporary culture. In spite of this, this project determines that, to this day, there is no complete study of the giant act from a gender perspective. The research from this project determines the social connotations, the mandates of gender and male domination inherent to the giant act based on gender stereotypes and roles and on social reproduction, which are reproduced in giantesses, giants, giant puppeteers and people in the folklore context.

Owning the Streets. Women’s Perception Regarding the Public Space of the "Antic" Neighbourhood of Manresa
Author: Clara Cirera Castellà
Degree: Geography and Spatial Planning
Abstract: The aim of this Final Degree Project is to demonstrate that the needs and experiences in public spaces of women as a single group are not real and that these opinions, experiences, and perspectives of the space depend on the social categories that each woman identifies with, as well as on their use and knowledge of the space. Nonetheless, this project also aims to show how the physical (lighting, state of the infrastructure, cleanliness, accessibility...) and social features (established relationships, activities, daily life...) of the Antic neighbourhood of Manresa affect women's experiences.

Women in Video games: Feminist Video games for Social Change
Author: Laura López Vollmer
Degree: Sociocultural Gender Studies
Abstract: This research-oriented Final Degree Project is a response to the issue of the masculinisation of video games and the digital gender violence that is perpetrated therein. Its main objective is to demonstrate how video games can become a feminist teaching tool that leads to social change. This is why we developed a "gamer guide," which justifies the relevance of this research: to fill the knowledge gap surrounding this topic while making up for the lack of empowered women referents (both on and off-screen) for children, especially girls and gender non-binary.
The Contractual Fiction of Sex. Arguing in Favour of the Decriminalisation of Sex Work Through Republican Political Theory
Author: Celia Fernández Ordoñez
Degree: Philosophy
Abstract: This essay argues in favour of the decriminalisation of sex work and its regulation through labour laws to lessen the precarious situation and exploitation of those who practise it. We present the main legal models and specific intervention policies derived from these, as well as their practical consequences. Additionally, adopting a republican perspective, we explore the specificity of this form of exploitation and consequences, and inquire into the possibility of freedom through intervention of the law and certain guaranteed material conditions.
Lights and Shadows in Disney-Pixar’s Luca: From Normalizing Tender Masculinity to Perpetuating Heteronormativity in Children’s Cinema
Author: Lisandra Muñoz Cabrera
Degree: English and French Studies
Abstract: The Walt Disney Company is a world leader in mainstream culture for adults and, particularly, children, hence the relevance of studying how its films portray gender. In the last few years, the audience has witnessed that male protagonists have gradually become more vulnerable and sensitive. In this dissertation, I analyse how masculinity is portrayed in Pixar's film Luca (2021), primarily through the main two characters, Luca and Alberto. I propose that they provide the audience with a tender view of masculinity. Instead of showing stereotypical traits commonly associated to young boys, they connect emotionally, openly show their feelings, and support each other, contributing to dismantling prejudices about intimacy between boys.

To achieve this, we present the historical and social factors that explain the situation of both dissidences in current Valencia and analyse three songs, chosen due to their cultural relevance within both of these communities, thus determining the elements that conform their status as emblematic for the queer Valencian community.

The Link Between Cardiac Nuclear Magnetic Resonance and Clinical Symptoms in Myocardial Ischaemic Pathology in Women: Searching for New Protocols
Author: Nicolás Umpiérrez Mayor
Degree: Medicine
Abstract: In this project, we evidence how, although cardiovascular disease (especially coronary heart disease) is one of the leading causes of death for women in industrialised countries, they are underrepresented in cardiological studies. Furthermore, the shortcomings when taking women’s medical history leads to a worse identification of the pathology, both by them and healthcare professionals. Altogether, it unavoidably leads to a worse prognosis of coronary heart disease in the female population.

Feminist Cyborg or Feminised Cyborg. Cyberautoethnography on the Internet, Identity and Gender
Author: Ada Claver Díaz
Degree: Psychology
Abstract: I am Ada, I am twenty-three, and I am a cyborg. Yes, you read right. I am a cyborg and, very likely, you are too. I get in touch with people beyond the space I am in. Instants become permanent with a click, and with another I can buy a hamburger, a vibrator, or a bicycle wheel, then get it delivered home. In A Cyborg Manifesto (1985) Donna Haraway uses the cyborg as a metaphor for the possibilities that the Internet offers to escape the maze of gender dualism to which we have constricted our own bodies to inhabit a feminist world. We examine the relation between the Internet, identity and women.

The Translations and Recreations of 'Torikaebaya Monogatari'
Author: Rafael Montón Gómez
Degree: Translation and Interpreting
Abstract: 'Torikaebaya monogatari' is a late Heian court tale about a half-sister and a half-brother who exhibit a behaviour typically associated with that of the opposite gender. After they switch genders and climb up the ranks of the imperial court, they are forced to revert to their original genders. While the tale was well received by coetaneous audiences, judged by its critique in the 'Mumyzshi', Meiji scholars deprecated it on moral grounds. This paper attempts to detect the main areas of contention between the selected texts, which undoubtedly lie in their particular depiction of sex, gender and sexuality, and construct an understanding of the Torikaebaya as a cultural artefact in a global society.
An “Interlude” of Transcendent Boundaries: Gender and Sexuality Analysis of the Takarazuka Theatre
Author: Aurora Gargallo Pla
Degree: East Asian Studies
Abstract: An interest in the enigmatic aura of the otokoyaku conceives this proposal of an immersion in the world of Takarazuka Revue and its way of playing with gender featuring the otokoyaku (male-role actresses) and musumeyaku (female-role actresses). Taking as a reference extensive documentation combining sources about theatre with classical philosophers of the genre, we evaluate whether the markedly binary roles of these musical works leave space for any type of transgression (narrative or extratextual) regarding gender discourse.

Urban Security with Gender Perspective. Localising and Identifying Unsafe Spaces for Women in the City of Mataró
Author: Natalia Esteve Fernández
Degree: Management of Smart and Sustainable Cities
Abstract: The project consists of a study on urban safety from a gender perspective, focusing on the women of the city of Mataró. First, we define the most important concepts to contextualise the study as a whole. Next, we evaluate the perception of vulnerability and fear felt by the women of Mataró, following a specific methodology known as an exploratory march. We also carry out a series of interviews in order to gain a deeper understanding of these women’s experiences and sensations at night. Then, we analyse the results of both methodologies in order to determine which of the studied areas accentuate the feeling of vulnerability as well as the traits of said environment. We also develop a map to quantitatively visualise the perceived degree of vulnerability in each part of the study area.

Gender Considerations: Prenatal Monitoring Device
Author: Antoni Parramon Naranjo

Abstract: To address the growing concern about gender biases in software development, international standards such as the IEEE P7003 have emerged. Different social and academic fields have raised awareness about the damage that poor software design or development can cause due to biases, as is the case with some artificial intelligence and big data algorithms, especially those related to health care or the justice system. There are, however, issues beyond software development and that is why this paper focuses on the importance of hardware design, highlighting the problems resulting from the lack of gender perspective in working groups and the IT sector.

Grete Hermann and the Foundations of Quantum Mechanics
Author: Gal·la Mora i Abelaira
Degree: Physics
Abstract: The acknowledgement of Grete Hermann’s (1901–1984) contribution to the foundations of quantum mechanics has grown in the past years. Hermann studied transcendental idealism as neo-Kantian philosopher Leonard Nelson’s (1882–1927) assistant. This philosophical ideology drew her to the latest developments in quantum theory, as they questioned the law of causation. Hermann analysed the reference texts for quantum mechanics with the original intent to prove that ethical formalism could allow for hidden variables, conserving causality. This paper studies Hermann’s debunking of von Neumann’s “proof” and poses different interpretations of this demonstration. It also illustrates the evolution of the concept of Hermann’s causality, which constitutes the thread of her contribution to physics.

Analysis of Lesbian Representation from a Feminist Perspective in the Luimelia Plotline in Amar es para siempre and its Spin-off #Luimelia
Author: Sara Castillo Hidalgo
Degree: Advertising and Public Relations
Abstract: Feminist and queer movements have evolved over the years, but we still live in a heteropatriarchal system. This is reflected in fiction, which perpetuates the popular consciousness and, consequently, has turned television into a tool for the creation and transmission of society models. Therefore, the objective of this project is to analyse and compare the representation of the lesbian plotline in the soap opera Amar es para siempre (based on the 70s) and its spin-off #Luimelia (based on current times) to determine whether there has been an evolution and what it has been like.

Sexualities and Primary Education: A Case Study from a School in Terrassa
Author: Ana Vilar i Caldero
Degree: Primary Education
Abstract: The objective of this project is to observe and analyse how sexualities are experienced in the school setting and to determine whether it constitutes an environment where students can talk about sexual and gender identity. To achieve this, we conducted a focus group, an interview with the principal of an early childhood and primary education centre and observed a Year 5 (10–11 years old) classroom. This allowed us to observe that the teaching staff has little training on the topic of sexual education, which can result in students getting scarce or poor education regarding sexuality. We also observed how gender roles and stereotypes are present in the school setting and how the impact of the teaching staff damages the self-esteem of children who identify as girls.

The Social Effects of Prostitution Policies on Sex Workers in Spain
Author: Talia Martínez Pérez
Degree: Political Science and Public Administration
Abstract: The main objective of this project is to show the social effects that the regulation of prostitution in Spain has on sex workers who practice it, with special consideration of the migrant women demographic, who constitute the biggest part. It also explains why all traditional ideological models violate the rights of sex workers and how and why the current development of public policies on prostitution is ineffective in providing an appropriate regulatory framework. The research methodology of the project is theoretical. On one hand, the study is based on the analysis of the legal framework that regulates the situation of sex workers in Spain, consisting mainly of the legislation that regulates prostitution itself and the law on foreigners. On the other hand, it analyses the social effects of these policies based on the literature review of research on the subject.

Korean Archaeology: An Exploration from a Gender Perspective

Abstract: The gender perspective is necessary to properly understand both current and past societies. But can it be applied everywhere? Is the western concept of gender the same in other areas? This project intends to bring these questions to light, handling the case of archaeology in Eastern Asia and carrying out an approach based on the research about the Silla kingdom in Korea—and simultaneously depicting the study process and putting on the table the problems we face when we stray from the western world: it analyses the accessibility of the information sources, as well as Spain’s wilfulness to learn and be educated on other archaeologies, foreign to the European and Anglo-Saxon world.
Annihilating Vanity: Attempting to Light the Match in George Eliot’s Silly Novels by Lady Novelists (1856)
Author: Clara Sánchez Artero
Degree: English Studies
Abstract: Throughout history, women have faced an unfair treatment, inequality due to their condition as women. During the 19th century, women novelists were not deemed able to be writers; they were considered “women who wrote.” Consequently, their works were not regarded as literature, which was essentially written by men. George Eliot is the pseudonym of Victorian novelist Mary Anne Evans, an open and strong-minded woman who wrote about social questions with a realist approach. Despite being an extraordinary writer, however, there are questions regarding her harshness towards her fellow women novelists. This research project focuses on George Eliot’s little-known essay Silly Novels by Lady Novelists (1856). This study defines Eliot's concept of “silly” while identifying her main criticisms of the novels of her era.

Prostitution, Violence and Resistance in Camila Sosa Villada’s Las Malas and José Donoso’s El lugar sin límites
Author: Aida Plata Pérez
Degree: English and Spanish Studies
Abstract: This project aims to analyse the prostitution spaces presented in the novels Las Malas, by Camila Sosa Villada, and El lugar sin límites, by José Donoso, to observe how prostitution presents itself as both a space of resistance and one of violence for the cross-dressing Latin-American subject. It is based on theoretical notions of gender by Teresa de Laurentis, Kimberlé Crenshaw and Judith Butler. Furthermore, it tackles the concept of cross-dresser homicide (travesticide), the working situation of cross-dressers in Latin-America, the cross-dresser subject and the legislation regarding self-appointed gender identity in the continent. All of this helps us see that literature brings us closer to understanding the silenced realities by the official narrative of cross-dressers.

Queering the Trans Question. On Transfeminine Bodies. Fagging. Dykeing. Feminising. Materialising.
Author: Carmen Joa Peralbo Bruno
Degree: Gender Studies
Abstract: This critical monograph tackles the problematisation of the trans question from the queering of transfem and queer bodies itself. This project is a nod to Susan Stryker’s formulation in Transgender Feminism. Queering the woman question, where she presents the need for the trans phenomenon and its contribution to the current third wave of feminism. Through this proposal, in the specific context of 21st century Spain, queering would mean opting for the queer disidentification strategies linked to Wittig’s, Deleuze’s and Stryker’s materialistic conceptions, along with Karen Barad’s approaches to neo-materialistic theory. On a different line, one chapter is dedicated to the relation between the neocapitalist model, based on Nancy Fraser’s criticism, and the construct of transfem and queer bodies within. We carry out a systematic bibliography assessment of the different authors following two definitions of transfemininity, one mainstream (Spanish Wikipedia) and another accepted by the medical community (DSM-V). Thus, they are presented with the aim of re-examining the transfem phenomenon through materiality, highlighting the (hetero)normative dimension that it implies.

Women in Belle Epóque Posters
Author: Esther López Sanchez
Degree: Art History
Abstract: This research revolves around the role of women in the posters of the Belle Epóque (Jules Chéret, Toulouse Lautrec and Alphonse Mucha), with a special focus on the local Ramón Casas. Their depictions in this medium were varied and versatile, depending on the recipient and what was advertised: a cabaret or café-concert, a play, alcohol or tobacco, locomotion and food. Due to this, this project examines the most representative types of posters—where we can observe differing depictions of women as either “fallen” women, femme fatales or “ideal” women—with a significant influence of the arts (from the Renaissance to the Pre-Raphaelites, Art Deco...).

The Trans Reality and Its Relationship with the Healthcare System: The Lack of Education Regarding Gender Perspective in the Medical Profession
Author: Rita Martínez Camacho
Degree: Medicine
Abstract: Between the definitions of “sex” and “gender” there is a boundary where we find trans people. Thus, a debate arises regarding that which has been considered undeniable: the differentiated designs between the masculine and feminine according to cultural definition (gender), but also biology (sex). This study has the objective of researching the opinion and degree of knowledge of healthcare professionals and medical students regarding gender, transsexuality and the queer community in general. Furthermore, it studies the shortcomings of the healthcare system as identified by trans users depending on the experiences they have had in this area. This way, it intends to research whether there is a lack of education regarding the gender perspective in the study of medicine, which would cause a deficient care when treating a trans patient.
Experiences of Queer People Over 65 Years of Age in the Primary Care Process
Author: Cecilia Raij Johansen
Degree: Nursing
Abstract: Queer, older people are a vulnerable demographic, affected by constant discrimination and invisibilisation. This translates to primary care, where treatment is not sufficiently individualised and inclusive. They have specific needs that are not met, and this fact has a negative impact in their health. To analyse this phenomenon, it is essential to contact the affected people and gather their experiences, observing the relations with nurses and whether they detect any reticence in them regarding the health of the community. This project proposes a qualitative study with a descriptive phenomenological design, using a semi-structured, individual interview.

Depressed, Guilty and Medicated. Transforming Psychology Inequality by Tackling Depression from a Gender Perspective
Author: Núria Martín Alcázar
Degree: Psychology
Abstract: From a feminist standpoint, depression is encompassed by the concept of gender discomfort. This stance considers that most of the prevalence of depression in women is due to the situation of inequality and subordination they find themselves in; their own role and identity; the socially established mandates of femininity and masculinity; the cultural conception of depression, and the psychopathologisation of natural processes. By implementing the gender perspective into the bio-psycho-medical model, depression is tackled in a cross-cutting and contextualised way and women are not considered responsible for their own discomfort. They are also not pathologised or consequently medicated, avoiding secondary effects from pharmacological and electroconvulsive therapies, the passive role of women in their own healing and the stigma associated to their roles and identity—thus reducing the discomfort caused by these and promote a better understanding of their needs.

Feminine Monstrosity in Japanese Cinematography: Case Study of Audition
Author: Irene Pereira Moral
Degree: East Asian Studies
Abstract: This work explores the notion of the feminine monstrosity present in Japanese horror cinema through the movie Audition (¿¿¿¿¿¿¿). This study is conducted with a gender perspective, examining the male imagery of monstrosity, both western and Japanese, and exposing how this conception perpetuates control over women's identity and sexuality. Furthermore, we give a sociological context of Japan in the decade in which the film was produced in order to understand that it responds to the fears of Japanese men in the face of the crisis of traditional values. Finally, a cinematographic and cultural analysis of the film is conducted to determine whether it is possible to interpret a feminist version of this work, despite having been developed with a male gaze.

Abstract: Inclusive language is an extremely controversial topic nowadays, as it implies changing the established norms and, consequently, changing the way we speak and think. This research project aims to determine what translating with a gender perspective entails. Furthermore, it also intends to research how strong the patriarchal pull in language is. With these objectives in mind, we offer a wide variety of literature on the subject (translation with a gender perspective and feminism). Then, we will analyse the specific terminology related to sex work that supposes a significant translation challenge, inspecting the possible translations from a gender perspective.

Authors: Sheila Escobar Peregrina, Carla Ojeda de la Viuda, Jessica Ozoekwe Bendehane, Berta Parramon Calbó
Degree: Environmental Science
Tutors: Roser Maneja and Eduard Ariza
Abstract: This project shines a light on women’s knowledge about medicinal herbs, as well as their properties and remedies; an oral tradition which, generation after generation, is becoming forgotten. Historically, the labour of harvesting herbs and their subsequent use has been directly associated with women. However, we observe a lack of acknowledgement by society and even judgmental criticism of this type of knowledge. With the purpose of appreciating this knowledge, we identify 14 medicinal herbs, interview both local and expert women to determine properties and remedies, and design a botanical route in the Aiguaneix route, in the Vall d’Alinyà. Through the preparation of a Route Support Guidance, we connect the aforementioned objectives while achieving acknowledgement as well as documenting this knowledge. Finally, we consider this an innovative project in Catalan territory, as it constitutes a hybrid of ethnobotany and gender perspective through the design of a botanical route. This tool allows us to educate and raise awareness about harvesting limits and how to reacquaint people with Nature.

Abstract: This project arises from the interest of the UAB’s Faculty of Science to diagnose the state of awareness among the Faculty’s community about gender discrimination and gender-based violence and the overall regard of the Faculty as a safe workplace for women. Based on these premises, we designed and statistically analysed a survey with the objective of painting a picture of the current situation. The results show that we still have a long way to go, but that gender perspective is more important to the student body than it is to teaching staff, and to women more than men. Co-Education: A Tool to Approach Gender Stereotypes and Sexual Orientation
Author: Àlex Reyes Castillo
Degree: Primary Education
Tutor: Joanna Empain
Abstract: The purpose of this final degree project is none other than to present two co-educational projects born in the city of Barcelona and how they work on unlearning gender stereotypes from a critical, reflective and feminist worldview. Schools are institutions of social transformation, and thanks to projects such as the ones we studied, children can learn different ways of looking at and understanding the world that surrounds them, leaving behind prejudices and gender stereotypes that prevail in our current society. This is why the co-education model we present takes into account the visual culture around us, as well as the handling and acquisition of gender stereotypes. In addition, it seeks strategies from equality in order to obtain an education that enables the visibility and normalisation of social groups that have been obscured throughout the years and to this day due to the heteropatriarchal society in which we are immersed. This reality has direct consequences ranging from imposing roles to restricting personal liberty. The purpose of this research is none other than to address an area of current social questioning and to contribute, as much as possible, to education from a gender perspective.

The Myth of Romantic Love in Early Childhood Education. How Do P5 Girls Understand Love?
Author: Silvia Casado Barahona
Degree: Early Childhood Education
Tutor: Laura Girbau Casajoana
Abstract: The myth of romantic love, from which many negative aspects stem from, is present in current society. Due to this, the main objective of this project is to determine how 6 girls in P5 (5–6 years old) conceptualise love and the acceptance of different types of love and relationships, as well as to determine whether they are influenced by the myth of romantic love. The secondary objectives are to assess whether the audiovisual and literary material at their disposal promotes and perpetuates the transmission of this myth and to determine if the main criteria that girls use to establish couples are based on physical appearance and standard western canons of beauty. We carried out the research individually with each child, through 3 different research instruments: a semi-structured interview, a survey through a questionnaire and play-based game dynamics. The study shows that most girls are strongly influenced by the myth of romantic love, mainly imparted by the audiovisual and literary material that their families and schools provide. It has been demonstrated that imparting this myth contributes to the prevalence of the patriarchal system and gender mandates. Thus, this stance has led to reflection on the importance of overseeing which messages are transmitted socially.

Playing Men. (Re)producing “Gaming YouTuber” Masculinities
Author: Maria Padró-Solanet Casajuana
Degree: Sociology
Tutors: Dafne Muntanyola Saura and M Esther Fernández Mostaza
Abstract: This project focuses on the phenomenon of “gaming YouTubers” as conducts of a male gender identity. Thus, we analyse qualitatively the projected masculinity over the last decade, and compare it to the characterizations of traditional hegemonic masculinity, the new hegemonic masculinity, and “geek” masculinities. We conclude that there is a trend towards homogeneity, highlighting aggression and competitiveness, "troll" humour, high expressiveness in game narrating, and hypersexualization and homophobia. However, we can find slight tonal differences, rather than values ¿¿and content. Surprisingly enough, we observe, on the other hand, a much higher overlap between the traditional and the new hegemonic masculinity than with “geek” masculinity. Finally, we observe an evolution towards convergence at a moderate level of aggression and expressiveness, possibly due to the constraints of YouTube's monetization policy (decreasing aggressiveness), in addition to the elrubiusOMG success model (increasing expressiveness).

The Feminisation of Part-Time Work. An Instrument of Indirect Sex Discrimination
Author: Ainoa Roa Ameigidez
Degree: Law
Tutor: Carolina Gala Durán
Abstract: Part-time work has become an instrument of sex discrimination on the basis of its most distinctive element: working time. This trait has turned part-time employment into a ghetto for women, as stated by trade unions. Throughout this project, we present the reasons why this situation is a reality, which can be summarised in one key argument: less working time allows for better compatibility between work activity and family and home responsibilities, a duty which is often attributed to women.

Young Men and Prostitution: The Role of Masculinity in Commercial Sex
Author: Laura Ruiz Sarrión
Degree: Criminology
Tutor: Encarna Bodelón González
Abstract: In recent years, there has been an increase in the consumption of commercial sex among young men, who have been raised in a context of sexual liberation and pursuit of gender equality. On this basis, the present research project aims to analyse the relationship between the consumption of heterosexual prostitution and the social conception of masculinity, the quest for which has been suspected to be a motivation. Thus, after determining the legal framework and the scale of the phenomenon in Spain, we delve further into the concept of hegemonic masculinity, and we present different studies regarding prostitution clients and their motivations. We use a qualitative method, conducting semi-structured interviews with five young men who have paid for sex. The results show that consuming prostitution is a strategy used by young men in order to affirm their virility and to fulfil the male ideal of a sexually active life. Two key factors in this process are peers and the refusal to establish emotional connections with women.

Women’s Sections. “Front Únic Femení Esquerrista”
Author: Yolanda Salomon Salas
Degree: Labour Relations
Tutor: Elisabet Velo Fabregat
Abstract: Women’s suffrage was a legal recognition for many women who demanded the ability to exercise that right. With their emergence in European countries and the US, feminist movements in Catalonia and Spain—the approval of the Republican Constitution of 1931 and Catalonia’s Statute of Autonomy of 1932—gave women legal recognition. Feminist associations, widely acknowledged by political parties, as well as the creation of the “Front Únic Femení Esquerrista a Barcelona” (Leftist Women’s United Front in Barcelona) played a significant part in this movement and in recognising their right to vote, access to education, decent work and politics. Women of the Republic created and established these associations.

Representation of Male Character in Judith Drake's An Essay in Defence of the Female Sex (1696): An Educational Proposal
Author: Nausica Vicens Salomon
Degree: English Studies
Tutor: Carme Font Paz
Abstract: This TFG focuses on Judith Drake's An Essay in Defence of the Female Sex (1696) in which she contends that the intellectual capacity of women is equal to men’s. This analysis explores her defence of women through the observation of male characters. Through them, Drake offers a full psychological portrait of men with ridiculous and satirical connotations. The way she depicts them allows her to evidence the mistakes of the opposite sex and offer a solution. She believes in a re-education of men in order to change the balance of power through a positive female influence. Hence, we could argue that Drake's Essay is clearly located in the tradition of late 17th-century women's writings about education.

Abstract: This project proposes an analysis of the feminine archetype that the character Elektra embodies in the opera world in contemporary history, with the aim to understand how musical language influences and reflects this model of femininity. To reach the conclusion, we carry out an analysis and comparison between the opera Elektra (1909) by Richard Strauss, based on Sophocles’ tragedy; the opera Agamemnon (1960) by Josep Soler, with aspects of Seneca texts; and the opera Mourning Becomes Electra (1967) by Marvin David Levi, based on the homonymous play by Eugene Gladstone O'Neill.

Abstract: This project analyses language techniques in French with the aim to achieve non-sexist communication. Inclusive language is a concept that comprises the set of transformations established in the grammatical gender in Standard French. In other words, non-sexist language intends to represent, include and give visibility to all social genders in grammatical gender. Thus, the starting point of this research project is a careful analysis of different morphological, lexical and typographical techniques.

Abstract: Among Instagram selfies, we can discern identities, and with these we discover that the app offers, in fact, a space for the subalternate to make their voices heard. We observe a new feminist strategy: women posting themselves semi or fully nude for empowerment. Is this possible, though, seeing as it stems from the same tools used by the patriarchy to objectify women’s bodies? This research project explores the difference in letting women control the narrative that represents their bodies, as well as doing it in a social media platform such as Instagram and with an outspoken feminist philosophy.

How to Create a Tragic Woman: Motherhood and Death in Western Tradition in Theatre

Abstract: An analysis of four female characters in canonical plays: Clytemnestra, Lady Macbeth, Phaedra, Hedda Gabler, paying close attention to how and why they kill, how they die and the role of motherhood in their arc. Associating female characters to the institution of motherhood is a constant in the characters that we find in the western canon—whether they follow it or reject it—to the point where the ability to bear children; unconditional, maternal love; submissiveness to their husband, children and social expectations have become conditions for avoiding any questions of their femininity.

Abstract: This project analyses the change in perspective regarding gender violence in trans people. These people have been socially ascribed to a specific gender and, consequently, have had experiences linked to said perceived gender. In transitioning, these experiences have radically changed. There are 8 interviews, structuring gender-based violence in 3 areas: intimate partner violence, sexual violence and public violence. The interviewees show a clear awareness of this change, their transition being a factor in encouraging said awareness of gendered privilege and oppression.

Gender Perspective in the Veterinary Profession

Abstract: We live in a sexist society, where we still associate “doctor” to men and “nurse” to women, and we struggle to conceive that women constitute half of the population. In veterinary medicine, though, this is no longer the case; women veterinarians are a majority. How have we achieved this change in a previously-male-dominated profession, where women are now the norm? How does this demanding profession affect our daily lives? This bibliographic review intends to find answers to this and poses questions to veterinarians from the Balearic Islands to gauge their views about the gender perspective in current times.

Gender Stereotypes in the Labour Market
Author: Violeta Jódar Mendoza
Degree: Economics
Tutor: Carmen Sarasúa
Abstract: The objective of this project is to explain the possible influence of gender stereotypes in the labour market on the basis of the following statement: to this day, men still hold more leadership positions than women in businesses, organisations and institutions. This invisible barrier that limits women’s careers is known as the glass ceiling. Although in the past decades we have seen great advances in modern society to guarantee equal opportunities for women and men, the reality is that women still face struggles to climb the hierarchical ladder within businesses. Throughout this project, we will prove the existence of segregation in the Spanish labour market on the basis of the discrimination models by Gary S. Becker (1957) and Kenneth Arrow (1973). Said analyses will be complemented by other perspectives that not only explain the point of view of demand but supply as well. Finally, we will take into account the possible incidence of stereotypes. In this line, our hypothesis is that stereotypes, though not the main cause, contribute to legitimise the prevalence of men in leadership positions. This hypothesis will be tested through an overview of the Spanish labour market to attest to the approximate quantitative dimension of the segregation. This will be complemented by 10 interviews to both women and men to capture the effect of stereotypes in the current state of things, reaching the conclusion that stereotypes do, indeed, increase the already-existing segregation and discrimination in the labour market.

Sexual Violence in Armed Conflicts. A Formative Programme in the Spanish Military
Author: Geòrgia Carrasquilla Lladó
Degree: Criminology Abstract: This thesis is a study of sexual violence in armed
conflicts. Both men and women are victims, and the perpetrators are diverse, although they are mostly members of military systems. Different factors explain this serious and invisibilised phenomenon, most of which stem from a patriarchal global ideology, all the more intensified within the military institution, which rewards masculinity (meaning strength and power) and punishes femininity (meaning weakness and submission). We propose an anti-sexual violence training programme specific to the Spanish military, as well as a victimisation survey design as an instrument to collect data and evaluate the programme.

Abstract: This final project analyses the differences between sexes within the sexual sphere in Ancient Rome. It focuses on women's passive role and studies the ways in which they defied it. It talks about the most notorious women who challenged the norms and studies the ways in which they were represented by their male peers. It discusses Roman prostitutes, as there is much information about their role in sexual activities. It focuses particularly on Pompeii's prostitutes, because many sexual graffiti have been found in the city. It argues that they could have been written by female prostitutes as a way of asserting themselves.

Women Who Fight in the Sand
Author: Lucía Ponce Cerezo
Degree: Archaeology
Abstract: When we think of ancient Roman spectacles, what comes to mind is gladiator fights, strong men fighting each other for the audience’s enjoyment; but were men the only ones facing each other in the arena? We know little about the participation of women gladiators. What we can gather from classic authors gives us the broad strokes about these women, but it is not enough information to declare that they really existed. Through the analysis of a series of found material remains, such as inscriptions, embossments or grave goods found in some tombs, the existence of these women can be verified.
