27/09/2022

The Bioblitz are scientific citizen participation events aiming to register as many living species as possible in and at a specific place and time. Citizens contribute with observations to the enrichment of the biodiversity databases used in research.

A Bioblitz has been developed for the first time on the UAB campus. It allowed to identify 277 taxa of animals and plants and make 510 observations of species of living beings in 24h, collectively. The UAB Bioblitz forms part of a biodiversity and sustanability campaign on campus entitled Sensibilització i recerca per transformar educant i incidint per la millora de la biodiversitat i la sostenibilitat al campus de la UAB. Its main objectives are to disseminate the ecological importance of the University campus, as well as manage the campus in a way to best conserve its ecology. The data obtained will help in diagnosing the biodiversity as a starting point for this project and will be essential when taking decisions on how to improve conservation efforts. This data has been shared and can be updated through the iNaturalist app.

The exhibition, organized by the Science and Technology Library, with the support of Sandra Saura Mas, full professor of the Ecology Unit (Department of Animal Biology, Plant Biology and Ecology of the UAB), and CREAF researcher. The exhibition can be visited until October 25 in the exterior showcases of the library.

We invite you to the presentation that will take place at our Espai BCT on October 19 at 1:00 p.m., by Sandra Saura and with the participation of the specialists who contributed to the organization of the Bioblitz.

Looking forward to see you!
