March 8th features the fight for gender equality and the end of discrimination against working women. The Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) joins this commemoration once again with an extended activity programme aimed at the university community

The XX International Women’s Day Jornada Institucional, the main event, will take place on March 10th at 12:00 at the UAB’s Rectorate Building Auditorium and it will be livestreamed. The act will be presided by the UAB rector, Dr. Javier Lafuente Sancho, who will open the event then give way to the university’s equality policy presentation by Dr. Esther Zapater Duque, the UAB Secretary General.

One of the key moments will be the act of recognition of the UAB’s Library Service, with an address by the head of the service, Ms. Núria Casaldàliga Rojas Llombart, followed by a video homage and the award-giving ceremony in recognition of their commitment to defending women’s rights at the University. Some activities organised by the Library Service stand out--the expositions located in every library on the occasion of International Working Women’s Day, the installation of Menstrual Points and the talks and roundtables regarding gender-related topics in different libraries. Also outstanding, is the participation of four libraries in the Equality Commissions of our Faculties and Centres.

Then, Dr. Núria Ferran Ferrer, rector’s delegate for the direction of the UB’s Equality Unit and Professor at the Faculty of Information and Audiovisual Media, will hold the following conference: “The role of libraries and library and information sciences in the construction of a more equal, diverse and inclusive society.”

The event will be closed with a musical performance by the UAB’s Chamber Choir of emblematic works like Bread and Roses or Cant de lluita by Roba Estesa. To finish off, the attendees will be offered a glass of cava.

The act will have Catalan Sign Language interpretation and captions.

Organised activities in different faculties

Aside from the main act, different faculties of the UAB have organised activities to commemorate March 8th.

  • Faculty of Medicine: The faculty drives the activity “Visibilising women in the field of Medicine“ with a series of lectures touching on different aspects of healthcare from a gender perspective. The activity will begin with the inauguration of the exposition “Voices of the desert, women and the Berber tradition” by Mar Serra, President of the AMRAD Association. Salvador Navarro, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, will then be in charge of the official welcome, followed by different conferences about gender perspective in physiotherapy, women and health in penal establishments and the importance of gender training in the medical field.

Finally, between March 3rd and 7th, the Faculty of Medicine will install the Equality Tree, an interactive activity where the community will be encouraged to post messages and reflections about the meaning of March 8th. These messages will be digitised and shared to give them visibility.
  • Faculty of Education: The Faculty of Education has organised a social media campaign with videos where different members of the education community talk about the importance of feminism and gender perspective in education. Until March 8th, these videos will be published daily in social media and the Faculty’s screens.
  • Geography and Gender Research Group: Presents the screening of the documentary No apto para cobardes (Not Suited for Cowards) by Nuria Silván Miracle. This work compiles the testimonials of fifty women over fifty contemplating taboo topics like menopause, maturity, the fear of ageing or loneliness. The screening will take place March 3rd at 10:00 in the UAB Cinema (Plaça Cívica).

The exposition can be visited between the months of February and March. Additionally, a virtual version of the exhibit was created with all of the contents that can be seen at the different expo installations.

It can be found in the Science and Technology Library from February 11th to March 31st.
    • “Guess Who?” game: An interactive proposal to put to test people’s knowledge of women scientists and inventors. It is displayed on the walls of the Faculties of Science and Biosciences and the School of Engineering from February 11th to March 8th.
