The doctoral course kicks off with a focus on research and AI
The UAB Communication Archive hosted the start of the 2025-2026 academic year of the doctoral program in Sports Science with a session focused on research experiences and the use of artificial intelligence.
Transparency and ethics were defined as the key pillars of AI in scientific production
Emilio Fernández Peña, director of the IRE, opened the event by welcoming the students and introducing the first participatory activity. Angela Stanescu and Ricardo Salinas, student representatives from the program, shared their doctoral experiences with the other participants, initiating a unique presentation format. Through the symbolic passing of the Barcelona '92 Olympic torch, each doctoral student explained who they were and what their current research entailed. Later, the UAB Media program "The Interview" featured Angela Stanescu and Dr. Carlos Lopezosa, a professor at the University of Barcelona, discussing the integration of AI into academic research.
After a coffee break that allowed for discussion among the attendees, the main event moved to the Comtec room in the Hemeroteca building. There, Dr. Carlos Lopezosa gave a presentation on the practical and critical introduction of AI in the university setting, addressing its evolution and current tools. The presentation emphasized key principles for safe use, addressing fundamental ethical issues such as transparency, traceability, fairness, and the risks associated with the privacy of results.
The session included examples of AI applications in both qualitative and quantitative studies, demonstrating its potential support in the different phases of the research process. The role of this technology as a collaborator and the emerging trends shaping the future of academia were discussed. After a question-and-answer session where the remaining doubts of the IRE members and other participants were clarified, the conference concluded.
