VII Gender Equality Meeting of the Xarxa Vives d'Universitats

Xarxa Vives 2019
On November 28 and 29, 2019, the Observatory for Equality at UAB took part of the VII Meeting "Grup de Treball d'Igualtat de Gènere de la Xarxa Vives d'Universitats", this year at Universitat Rovira i Virgili, in Tarragona.

16/12/2019

This year, the meeting was divided in two big blocks. On the one hand, the first block consisted on a joint training session between the universities' Equality and Quality Units, focused on providing indications, data and resources to incorporate the gender perspective in evaluation and accreditation processes of universities.  On the other hand, the first part also included a conference about budgets with a gender perspective in universities, as well as the debate and reflection from different experiences like the «Programes de mentoria en temes d’igualtat a càrrecs de gestió» of the University of the Basque Country or the initiatives by the Women and Science Commission of the Inter-University Council of Catalonia.

The second block consisted on the presentation of the results of the report El biaix de gènere en el reclutament, la promoció i la retenció del personal a les universitats, coordinated by Inma Pastor (Director of the Observatory for Equality at the Universitat Rovira i Virgili) and Anna Pérez-Quintana (Director of the Equality Unit at the Universitat de Vic - Universitat Central de Catalunya). The publication analyses the differences between women and men in the academic and professional career of students, the academic and research staff (PDI) and the administrative and services staff (PAS) of the Xarxa Vives' universities. The report intends to raise awareness of the situation of women in universities and contribute in the policy making in order to correct the existent inequalities.

As the academic rank increases, the presence of women is reduced; although the administrative and services staff is a feminized group, 7 in 10 senior positions are held by men; and the choice of university studies still responds to gender stereotypes. These are some of the realities in universities that are concluded and highlighted in the report.

The report concludes with a number of proposals and claims to correct the identified gender inequalities. On the one hand, the need of evaluating in university policies the incidence of the indicators that diagnose the gender inequality at universities is pointed out. On the other hand, the report reclaims the urgency of carrying out researches that quantify the university staff needs on conciliation and joint responsibility.

Finally, 6 new Guies per a una docència universitària amb perspectiva de gènere will be published in 2020 to incorporate the gender perspective in teaching and university research with a conjoint strategy.
