The UAB is committed to research and training in sport and will offer a new PhD program in Sports Science in the 2022-23 academic year, within the framework of the Sports Research Institute.

PhD Program on Sport Science

The PhD program in Sports Science is based on two different values: interdisciplinarity and international orientation.

The PhD program in Sports Sciences aims to train researchers in the field of Sports Sciences from related research disciplines (psychology, education, communication, economics, engineering, medicine), and provide them of a disciplinary and multidisciplinary vision, aimed at solving the needs and challenges of sport today.

It is aimed at students from different academic fields: social and legal sciences, humanities, engineering, health sciences and sciences; physical activity and sport are always present in all studies developed.

The PhD program in Sports Science is based on two different values: interdisciplinarity and international orientation. It is based on the desire to delve into the complexity of the world of sport as a global and multifaceted phenomenon, approaching it from a multidisciplinary perspective where sport knowledge is integrated with other related areas of knowledge. This multidisciplinary view of sport is complemented by researchers from different fields of knowledge in applied sport sciences.

The program is structured in seven research lines. More than 25 PhD directors from the UAB and other national and international research centres participate.

  • Research line in Digital Sport: Communication, Technology and Language
    Media; fiction, social networks; multilingual translation and interpretation; big data, automation; sports; marketing; branding.
     
  • Research line in Sport, Health, Sustainability and Urbanism
    Healthy lifestyle; healthy benefits of sport; active ageing; creative urbanism; sports spaces and equipment; urban resilience; sports practice in a natural environment.
     
  • Research line in Sport Documentation and Research Methodolog
    Research methodology; scientific documentation; information sources; information management.
     
  • Research line in Psychological, Educational and Social Development in Sport
    Sports initiation; dual career; sports arbitration; sports values ​​in children and families; intervention in social agents; gender and social inclusion through sport.
     
  • Research line in Olympic Studies
    Transversal line for investigations dealing with the Olympic phenomenon.
     
  • Research line in Economics, Management and Governance of Sports Organizations
    Sport economics; sport management; sports law; entrepreneurship within the sports field; governance of sports organizations.
     
  • Research line in Sports Performance
    Sports training management; improvement of sports performance; sport analytics applied to performance

The PhD program in Sports Sciences is coordinated by Dr. Maria Prat Grau and has been promoted by the UAB Sports Research Institute (IRE-UAB), a UAB institute that brings together the research, training and knowledge transfer initiatives promoted by the UAB in the field of sport. IRE-UAB brings together 36 senior UAB researchers from 15 departments that promote lines of research, postgraduate and doctoral programs, and knowledge transfer activities in the field of sport, with interdisciplinarity, internationalization and relevance social as differentiating elements.
