The LGTBI Universities Group is the first institutional network created in the LGTBI area in Spain. It is a group composed by 34 universities of the Spanish State which wants to tackle the fact that in Spain, and in the Spanish universities, there are still cases of discrimination against LGTBI people.

The group holds that education is a fundamental pillar of respect for diversity. Universities cannot accept any kind of discriminatory attitude; they must be safe spaces that focus on the value of the benefits of diversity and human rights. The LGTBI Universities Group recognizes the need to work in a coordinated way, with a constant dialogue between civil society and institutions to exercise social responsibility and commit to equality, the fight against hate and intolerance.

For all these reasons, the UAB has joined the manifesto "University is universe and universe is diversity. For LGTBI rights", in commemoration of the 17M, International Day against LGTBIphobia, along with the universities of Alcalá, Alicante, Autónoma de Madrid, Barcelona, Cádiz, Cantabria, Carlos III de Madrid, Complutense de Madrid, Córdoba, Extremadura, Girona, Huelva, Jaén, La Coruña, La Laguna, La Rioja, León, Lleida,  Málaga, Oviedo, Abierta de Cataluña, Pablo de Olavide, País Vasco / EHU, Pompeu Fabra, Rey Juan Carlos, Rovira I Virgili, Sevilla, Valencia, UNED, Valladolid and Zaragoza, with the aim of making the problem visible and establishing partnerships between educational institutions and sharing experiences.

Efforts must continue to be made to raise awareness and sensitize university communities, and to guarantee and improve training to include affective-sexual and gender diversities in educational plans for students, Administrative and Services Staff (PAS) and Teaching and Research Staff (PDI).
