April 26, Lesbian Visibility Day

26 abril 2020

On 26 April Lesbian Visibility Day is celebrated. For this reason, we want to make a series of cultural suggestions on lesbian subjects to raise awareness and claim lesbian women as models.

On Sunday, 26th of April is Lesbian Visibility Day, a date that has been celebrated in Spain and several other countries around the world since 2008. The objective of this date is to make this group visible and to show the importance of lesbian women having space and being visible in public spaces, to demand full equality of rights and to claim lesbian women models in all areas, not only within the activism for LGTBIQ+ rights.

To make this group visible, we have made a compilation of some cultural proposals (literature, films, series, etc.) on lesbian themes.

In the field of literature we recommend: Poesía para niñas bien, Txus Garcia (Editorial Bellaterra, 2018); Entre nosotras. Una antología, Audre Lorde (Visor Libros, 2020); Permagel, Eva Baltasar (Club Editor, 2018); La passió segons Renée Vivien, Maria Mercè-Marçal (Editorial LaButxaca, 1994).

In relation to essays, we highlight Lesbianas. Discursos y representaciones by Lucas Platero (Editorial Melusina, 2008) which takes a precise and systemic look at the recent history of lesbianism in Spain, and El pensamiento heterosexual y otros ensayos by Monique Wittig (Editorial Egales, 2005), which has become a classic and where heterosexuality is analyzed as a political regime and not simply as a series of sexual practices.

We also want to suggest series as Killing EveOrange is the new BlackGentleman Jack or The L Word, and films like Elisa y MarcelaBlue is the warmest colourLa Belle Saison80 egunean or Carmen y Lola.

Finally, we recommend the documentary Lesbofòbia. Un documental i deu respostes (Creación Positiva, 2019) directed by Inés Tarradellas that gathers experiences and reflections of several lesbian women in the Catalan context, available here.
