Professor Agustí Nieto-Galan has been awarded a Sassoon Visiting Fellowship to support research in the Special Collections of the Bodleian Libraries, University of Oxford (UK). He will be a Visiting Fellow at the Weston Library, Bodleian Libraries, during the Trinity Term (April-June 2024) to research “Helping Refugee Scholars: The “Society for the Protection of Science and Learning” and the Fight for Freedom of Thought and Study (1933-1956)”.
The Archive of the Society for the Protection of Science and Learning (SPSL), which was deposited in the Bodleian Library in 1958, is a very valuable resource for the historical reconstruction of academic and scientific internationalism and international solidarity throughout the twentieth century. More than 4000 files, preserved and carefully catalogued in 578 boxes, provide a unique opportunity to explore the long-term effect of dictatorships in the never-ending quest for freedom of thought, study, and speech.
