The IUNE Observatory 2017 report on Spanish universities' R&D&I shows an increase in scientific productivity, visibility and the number of patents granted between 2006 and 2015, despite a loss in leadership in the experimental sciences field.

The UAB ranks among the top 100 most innovative universities in Europe. It is located in 81st position in the Reuters News ranking, which assesses patents and the commercial impact of university research. The ranking is based on the data provided by Clarivate Analytics and analyses institutions which have applied for at least 50 patents between 2010 and 2015.
The UAB obtains a maximum score in 26 of the 33 indicators evaluated by the Fundación Conocimiento y Desarrollo (CYD). The CYD ranking evaluates a total of 69 Spanish universities and is based on the European Commission's U-Multirank.
