A set of videos were presented, with voice over in English and the participation of young activists debating and explaining resources available to help prevent the practice of female genital mutilation. The project, entitled “Conèixer per actuar" [Know to Act], was launched by the Fundació Wassu, and gives visibility to the improvement proposals and discourses of the youngest generations by providing dissemination material in English and distributing it to communities in which this practice persists.

The "Know to Act" project aims to raise awareness of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and to promote the defence, guarantee and exercise of women's human rights. This proposal focuses on the activism of the younger generations linked to the struggle for the abandonment of the practice from a critical intercultural perspective.

The objective is to raise awareness among the indirect beneficiaries of the project, as well as to strengthen and improve interventions in the prevention of FGM, giving visibility to the discourses and proposals for improvement in the prevention of this practice of young activists working to eradicate FGM.

Female Genital Mutilation is a fundamental violation of the rights of girls and women. It is any procedure that involves partial or total removal of the external female genitalia or injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons. Currently, more than 200 million women and girls are survivors of FGM in the 30 countries in Africa, the Middle East and Asia where the practice is concentrated. In addition, 15 million adolescent girls aged 15-19 are at risk of being mutilated by 2030, according to figures from the World Health Organisation (WHO, 2016).

This audiovisual production is part of the Project "Know to Act: Map of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in Spain 2021 and creation of training materials for professionals in detection, prevention and care of FGM in Spain", funded by the Ministry for Inclusion, Social Security and Migration (MISSM) and co-financed by the Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund (FAMI). The contents are the sole responsibility of the authors and do not necessarily reflect the views of the MISSM or the FAMI.

The translation and voice over of these materials into English, which has been financed by the Catalan Fund for Development Cooperation (FCCD), has a double purpose: on the one hand, to improve their accessibility to groups belonging to the communities where this practice is still carried out in the diaspora, and on the other hand, to achieve dissemination and increase awareness, commitment and support from the international community on FGM.

Thus, the publication of the materials can facilitate mutual learning and the improvement of FGM prevention interventions while other professionals and organisations working in this field can benefit from the knowledge, strategies and good practices shared in these videos.
