Marina Subirats awarded an honorary doctorate by the URV

The Rovira i Virgili University decided to award honorary doctorates to two UAB professors: Pilar Benejam and Marina Subirats. The awards ceremony for emeritus professor in sociology Marina Subirats took place on 30 April. She was sponsored by Joan Martí, professor and former rector of the URV.

Marina Subirats, emeritus professor in sociology of the UAB, was recently awarded an honorary doctorateby the Rovira i Virgili University in a ceremony that took place on 30 April in Tarragona, with a very small group of people attending due to the current health situation. Subirats was sponsored by emeritus professor in Catalan Studies and former rector of the URV, Joan Martí, who proposed Subirats for the doctorate together with the URV's Observatory for Equality.

Subirats received her PhD in philosophy and arts by the UB and graduated from sociology at the École des Hautes Études de París. She was researcher at the Institut d'Aménagement et urbanisme de la Région Parisienne, at the Laboratoire de Sociologie Industrielle and at the Centre d'Études des Mouvements Sociaux. She also worked in research at the Jaume Bofill Foundation, and directed the Institute of Women belonging to the Ministry for Social Affairs. She was also Councillor of Education at the Barcelona City Hall, member of the State School Council and Vice President of the Spanish Sociology Federation. She is currently president of the Economic and Social Council of Barcelona. She has also been awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Valladolid.

Subirats' nomination was accepted at the same time as the nomination of Pilar Benejam, retired professor of the Department of Language and Literature Education and Social Science Education of the UAB, who was awarded the honorary doctorate at the URV in a ceremony which took place in December 2019.
