IRE-UAB researchers publish an article on the university-school experience "Un dia al SAF" in the Journal of Teacher Education
Xènia Ríos-Sisó (IRE-UAB), Carlos Moriana (UAB), Laura Carbonero-Sánchez (IRE-UAB), and Eric Roig-Hierro (UB) lead a study that evaluates the impact of this collaborative project on teacher training. The initiative allows future teachers to design and lead physical activity sessions for children at the UAB facilities.
The practical experience improves key teaching competencies such as group management and conflict resolution among future teachers.
The study, jointly developed by IRE-UAB researchers Xènia Ríos-Sisó and Laura Carbonero-Sánchez alongside Carlos Moriana and Eric Roig-Hierro, has been published in the scientific journal Journal of Teacher Education. The research analyzes how 102 students of the UAB's Bachelor's Degree in Primary Education value their participation in the university-school collaboration project "Un dia al SAF". This initiative, coordinated by Carlos Moriana and Xènia Ríos, is directly linked to the subject Physical Education and its Didactics I, taught during the third year of the university degree.
For four mornings, the students are in charge of designing, organizing, and leading cooperative physical activities aimed at around 200 children between 6 and 10 years old from a primary school that travels to the sports campus (SAF). The future teachers not only facilitate the games but also assume responsibilities such as welcoming the schoolchildren, organizing the sessions, attending to the group's diversity, and resolving conflicts. All this work is carried out with the continuous guidance and support of the university teaching staff in charge of the subject.
The results of the research indicate that the participants perceive that this experience contributes significantly to the development of key professional competencies, such as group management, adaptability, decision-making, communication, and teamwork. The students report that the project facilitates the connection between theory and practice and increases their confidence in the teaching role, fostering an active reflection on their future profession. The research reflects the value of incorporating these direct practical experiences in collaboration with schools within the degree's own subjects to complement traditional external internships.
