Four UAB researchers present research at the X AE-IC Congress on sports cinema as a pedagogical tool to communicate social justice
Iliana Ferrer, Ludovico Longhi, Leonor Balbuena, and Daniel Arrebola showcase in Pontevedra how audiovisual sports narratives influence the construction of human values.
The study demonstrates that sports cinema is an effective pedagogical tool to communicate values of social justice, dignity, respect, and responsibility to young audiences aged 16 to 25.
The Spanish Association of Communication Research (AE-IC) hosted the presentation of the study titled "Més enllà del marcador: el cinema esportiu com a dispositiu pedagògic per comunicar justícia social en temps d'incertesa". This scientific work, defended by this team of researchers from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, is directly linked to the Scientific Association for the Evaluation and Measurement of Human Values (a-eva.org).
The main objective of the study was to analyze how different narrative structures in sports cinema affect the perception and construction of human values. The research provided empirical evidence showing that sports films serve as an effective tool to communicate social justice and equity during times of uncertainty, directly shaping the construction of dignity, respect, equality, and responsibility.
Based on the findings, the team proposed expanding the sports film forum framework as a pedagogical resource, specifically targeting young audiences between 16 and 25 years old. At the same time, the project highlighted the importance of pursuing new research lines focused on female sports cinema and Ibero-American films. These proposals aim to strengthen the use of audiovisual media as a driver for social reflection among younger generations.
