ART AND STROKE. Paintings by Javier Engel

ART AND STROKE. Paintings by Javier Engel

The exhibition Art and Stroke. Paintings by Javier Engel, curated by Francesc-J. de Rueda Roigé, presents a selection of pastel paintings by an artist who has developed a unique career marked by his ability to adapt and continue his creative activity after suffering three ischemic strokes in 1998.
A painting enthusiast since his youth, Javier Engel began working with oil techniques. After the strokes, which affected the right side of his body, he resumed his artistic activity using his left hand and discovered that pastels allowed him to continue expressing his creative sensitivity.
The exhibition brings together about sixty works that reflect some of the most recurring themes in his production: seas and rivers, buildings, and flora and fauna. Among these motifs, the depiction of the sea and boats stands out in particular, a topic closely linked to his passion for sailing. Over the years, the artist has displayed his work in various cultural and exhibition spaces, including the Vall d’Hebron Hospital, several exhibition halls in Catalonia and Madrid, and shows organized by the Superar Ictus Barcelona Association (ASIB). Beyond his artistic interest, this exhibition aims to raise awareness in the university community and society as a whole about stroke and its consequences. The exhibition highlights how creativity and artistic activity can continue to be part of people’s lives after a stroke, while also giving visitors the chance to experience a body of work built from experience, perseverance, and commitment to artistic creation.
