Ros Rivas: revealed moments

Ros Ribas

Photographs from the early years of Teatre Lliure

This exhibition presents a selection of photographs by Josep Ros Ribas taken at the Teatre Lliure between 1976 and 1991, during the early years of his career as a stage photographer.

His connection to the Teatre Lliure goes back to the founding of the institution in 1976, when he began systematically photographing its performances. In this context, and under the mentorship of set designer and stage director Fabià Puigserver, Ros Ribas developed his own perspective and a way of documenting the stage that would become a constant throughout his professional career. His relationship with the Teatre Lliure continued for decades, up until 2021.

At the same time, his professional work expanded to numerous theaters, companies, festivals, and institutions connected to the performing arts, both in Catalonia and the rest of Spain, as well as across Europe. Among other institutions, he worked as the official photographer for the Centro Dramático Nacional, the Compañía Nacional de Teatro Clásico, the Teatro Español, and the Odéon - Théâtre de l’Europe in Paris, as well as on productions by the French stage director Patrice Chéreau.

Over nearly fifty years of his career, Josep Ros Ribas extensively documented the performing arts, in both analog and digital formats. His photographic archive, consisting of nearly one and a half million images, serves as a record of the history of Catalan, Spanish, and European theater in recent decades.
