Christmas Concert
UAB Choir and Orchestra

This year's Christmas concert "Escolteu el nostre clam" will begin with the UAB Orchestra introducing us to two composers, Edward Elgar and Ottorino Respighi, who composed in between the 19th and 20th centuries, a tumultuous time with artistic hustle and bustle. For some composers, it was necessary to find new ways to face music, making new and risky proposals, while others – like the two composers mentioned - make more anchored bet in the already existing Romanticism: Edgar, in the piece Salut d’amour, tells us about love from most innocent to the passionate; in turn, Respighi produces a rereading of Renaissance music in his work Antiche danze ed Aire per liuto.

In the second part, the Choir of the UAB will present us a collection of songs from all over the world. In the first place, Dindirindin, a Christmas carol which was well known during the 16th and 17th Centuries, where several languages are mixed: Spanish, Catalan, Provençal and French. Secondly, Yver, vous n’estes qu’un villain, a beautiful and expressive Impressionist madrigal. To continue, Momigi, a Japanese song that describes the trees in the fall. Next, Zà nà yáo yuan de di Fang a traditional Chinese song that tells us about the beauty of a girl and how a boy would like to become the flock of her flock, the Choir sings the melody in an imitating version the instrumental accompaniment. The concert will follow with a piece from the film Frozen called Vuelie. Finally, they will perform Lata d’Agua, a Brazilian song that looks at the city from the favelas, from the other side of the wall.

In the latter part, Choir and Orchestra together will play Hör mein Bitten, "Hear my Prayer", a hymn of F. Mendelssohn that paraphrases the first verses of Psalm 55. Finally, to close the concert, they will play and sing Santa Nit, a Christmas carol that has become Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by Unesco and we celebrate this year the 200th anniversary of its composition.
