Between the Tigris River and the Zagros Mountains

Exhibition Between the Tigris River and the Zagros Mountains

This exhibition presents the results of a decade of archaeological research in the Iraqi Kurdistan carried out by the SAPPO group of the Department of Prehistory at the Autonomous University of Barcelona between 2015 and 2025. Through an interdisciplinary approach, the project explores the evolution of human societies from the last groups of hunter-gatherers to the emergence of the first agricultural and urban communities in Upper Mesopotamia, where the team has been conducting archaeological work for over 30 years.

The route is structured between two great landscapes, the Zagros Mountains and the Tigris plain, key settings in the history of humanity. Through the study of three major sites (Gali Chnar, Banahilk, and Gird Lashkir), more than 7,000 years of social, economic, and cultural transformations that gave rise to some of the earliest civilizations of the Near East are reconstructed.

The exhibition highlights both scientific research and the need to preserve heritage, and invites the visitor to discover the richness and complexity of this territory, which is fundamental for understanding the origins of today's society.
