Abstract: Most environmental decisions involve intertemporal trade-offs, in that they require foregoing immediate gratification for the sake of future environmental quality. One such example is investing in improving energy efficiency, which entails an initial upfront cost in exchange for a future stream of reduced energy use and economic savings. Previous experiments have sought to address the energy-efficiency gap by addressing information deficits and cognitive constraints. Our experiment aims at understanding the role of individual temporal preferences in the decision to invest in energy conservation. We report results from two studies: the first based on a sample of 224 students at a Spanish university and the second based on a nationally representative sample of 2,010 United States adults. Participants were presented with a choice between two appliances that differed solely in purchase price and lifetime operating costs. We manipulated the salience of energy costs and primed participants with future-oriented messages. Our treatments increased energy-efficient choices by 16–24 percentage points compared with the status-quo scenario. Present-oriented individuals are less likely to purchase energy-efficient appliances. Displaying loss-framed messages that highlight the opportunity cost of inefficient appliances can counteract individuals’ impatience.

Abstract:
Individuals with higher cognitive ability have been found to be more political influent and more pro-social. But how does their higher cognition relate to their preferences for redistribution? Related insights seem to point towards a positive link, but empirical evidence is still incipient. We expand on the sole existing estimates by exploiting two rich cohort studies from the United Kingdom that measure cognitive ability during childhood and outcomes and preferences during adulthood. We find a non-linear relationship in which support for redistribution is effectively higher among the more able.
