Legal Studies and Opinions Service (SEDIJ)
On 18 April 2012, the Legal Studies and Opinions Service (SEDIJ) was created by the Knowledge Transference and Strategic Projects Committee through Agreement 20/2012. This service was composed of full-time teaching staff from the Departments of Private Law, Political Science and Public Law, and Public Law and Legal History Studies. Its main role was to promote and channel the transfer of knowledge from the university to society, specifically from the Faculty’s academic staff to the legal profession, other legal practitioners, and public and private entities requiring their services.
Additionally, SEDIJ has contributed to fulfilling the University’s Social Responsibility (USR) by promoting and producing non-profit legal reports and opinions on matters of social significance (pro bono), with the active participation of students.
In this first stage, which was led by Dr. Míriam Cugat Mauri as director of the service, together with Dr. Núria Reynal Querol as secretary member, and Dr. Joan Amenós Álamo as member in charge of economic affairs, SEDIJ produced numerous legal opinions, reports, and studies for a range of public and private institutions. The Faculty’s teaching staff, highly specialized in various legal fields, has been able to carry out this service with high quality and excellence.
On 29 January 2024, after more than a decade of rigorous and professionally sound activity, SEDIJ entered a new phase. On that date, the Faculty of Law Board approved the modification of the Service’s Regulations. This new period aims to consolidate the excellent work achieved during the first stage and to promote the body in matters of academic and social interest, with special attention to issues related to social justice. To this end, the IURISLAB Legal Clinic is created.
The IURISLAB Legal Clinic is an ambitious project that seeks to build on SEDIJ’s substantial legacy, as well as on the numerous transversal initiatives undertaken within the Faculty in the field of social and academic knowledge transfer, pro bono activities, and support for scientific and technological start-ups and spin-offs. The clinic also aims to integrate student-led projects promoted by the Faculty, such as the Argumentation and Debate Group (GAD), which focuses on developing oral and written skills in argumentation, fostering critical thinking, etc.
