Renewing a Student's Relative Residence Authorization Card
In Barcelona, the Student Section of the Immigration Office is responsible for processing extensions of study stay authorizations.
FIRST STEP: APPLY FOR THE RENEWAL OF THE STUDENT FAMILY MEMBER PERMIT (online procedure)
Study stay extensions will be processed exclusively online.
- The new immigration regulations only allow submission by the interested person (the student) through the Mercurio platform.
- To submit the application electronically, it is necessary to have an electronic signature, which can be obtained on the idCAT website. This certificate must be generated using the NIE number (not the passport). You may provide the TIE, the visa, or the permit resolution.
- Remember that you cannot obtain the electronic signature if the TIE, visa, or permit is already expired.
At the ISS we can review your application file before submission and help you with the online process. We can also inform you about how to obtain the electronic signature.
Documents:
All documents must be submitted in an official language (Spanish or Catalan). If this is not possible, originals duly legalized (form 37) in other languages will be accepted as long as they are accompanied by a sworn translation.
1. Tax 790 052:
- Tax option 1.1.2. "Prórroga de la autorización de estancia de larga duración por estudios, movilidad de alumnos, prácticas no laborales o servicios de voluntariado (titular principal y sus familiares)"
- The tax must be paid before presenting the renewal application and a copy must be provided of the receipt of payment along with the other documentation. Paying the tax does not automatically imply that renewal has been granted but it is not possible to favourably resolve the application unless it can be shown that the corresponding fees have been paid.

4. TIE card (Tarjeta de Autorización de Estancia) (both sides)
5. TIE card of the person who offers the right of the relative to visit.
6. Marriage or birth certificate
7. For children, certificate of school attendance in Spain
8. Proof of economic means. The head of the family must be able to offer proof of that they have the necessary economic means to maintain a family. (economic means table)
9. Health insurance policy that covers illness and accidents during the whole stay in Spain as well as the medical expenses.
Application submission deadline
Remember that the deadline to request an extension of study stay is 2 months before the authorization expires, and up to 3 months after, although from the day after expiration, the holder will be in an irregular situation.
SECOND STEP: APPLY FOR THE NEW TIE (in-person procedure at the National Police)
Once you have received the favorable resolution of your permit renewal from the immigration office, you must book an appointment with the police for fingerprinting for the new card and bring the following documents:
Documentation
1. Official form EX17 (original and copy).
2. Main page of your passport (original and copy).
3. Previous TIE card (original and copy).
4. Affirmative response for the renewal or, if you do not have it, screenshot of the webpage in where you were notified of such affirmative response.
5. Appointment confirmation data.
6. ID card-size pictures (3).
7. Census registration if you have changed places since the last time.
8. 790/012 Tax : document filled + receipt of tax payment.
