Credit recognition for language learning purposes

Credit recognition for language learning purposes

You can obtain academic recognition for activities leading to improved knowledge, mastery and use of languages, for up to a maximum of 12 credits, except for students taking a double degree, who can only obtain 6.

If the degree you are taking is taught in English, you can only obtain a maximum of 6 credits by adding together those obtained for taking subjects in English and credits for taking subjects that form part of a mobility programme.

Students enrolled for studies to learn a specific language cannot receive recognition for additional learning in the same language.

What types of language learning can be recognised?

  • Subjects: If you pass subjects taught in a foreign language, included in the UAB curriculum, you can obtain 1.5 additional credits for each 6 credits you pass, unless they are subjects from degree programmes that are already oriented towards language learning in that specific language.
  • Activities: you can obtain credits for learning activities to achieve language mastery, as long as you are not enrolled on degree programmes for language learning in that same language.
  • Mobility programmes: you can obtain 1.5 credits for each 6 credits you pass taken in foreign languages if you undertake a study visit to a university in another country as part of a mobility programme and take a minimum of 30 credits taught in a foreign language.
  • Sign language: you can obtain 1.5 credits for each course you pass, up to a maximum of 3 credits, if you accredit having passed sign language courses taught by institutions recognised by education departments.

Recognition of language courses and certificates:

You can have 3 credits recognised for each full level passed in a foreign language in line with the Language Service levels if they are accredited by certification from an official institution, in accordance with to the table below, up to a maximum of 12 credits:

  • If it is the same language that you have accredited at the university through the national university entrance examinations (PAU) or vocational training (CFGS) recognition will be awarded for Language Service level 4 and above.
  • If it is a foreign language other than the one used for course entry, recognition will be awarded for Language Service level 1 and above.
  • If you have undertaken upper secondary education abroad (for example, Batxibac), your first foreign language will be that of your upper secondary education. If you have taken vocational training (CFGS), your first foreign language will be that of the language of instruction for your CFGS.
  • Spanish: If you took secondary studies in a country that does not use Spanish as an official language, 3 credits per level will be recognised if you can accredit the achievement of at least Language Service level 4.
  • Catalan: If you took secondary studies in an autonomous community or country that does not use Catalan as an official language, 3 credits can be recognised by level if you accredit that you have achieved Language Service level 1 or higher.

If you can accredit Language Service level 9 (C2), you can obtain recognition for 3 credits.

  • Occitan (Aranese): If you have taken secondary studies in a region, autonomous community or country that doesn't use Occitan as an official language, you can obtain recognition for it if you accredit Language Service level 1 or higher.
  • Official languages of other autonomous communities, other than Spanish: if you can accredit Language Service level 9 (C2) you can obtain recognition for 3 credits.

You can check the equivalences of the certificates and diplomas that accredit knowledge of a language in the tables published by the Board of the Catalan Inter-University Council (currently under review by the CIC, there may be changes soon), based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). If you do not have a certificate, you will have to take a level test at the Language Service.

Recognition is progressive, taking the highest level accredited as a reference, based on the table below:
