UAB now consumes fair trade coffee

07/09/2011
Volunteers began to campaign for UAB to change to fair trade coffee at all university cafeterias with the slogan "Wake Up with Fair Coffee at UAB". They reached their goal after collecting 1,713 signatures and the support of 36 university organisations made up of students, administration and services staff, and faculty staff from different centres and departments.
The initiative also meets the objectives of the UAB Governing Council, passed in 2005, to "put into action new strategies towards building a more just society ready to face new social challenges such as corporate social responsibility, sustainable development and ethically responsible commitment."
Fair trade coffee offers an added ethical value to the product by including ecological, social and gender equality aspects. It contributes to sustainable growth by offering better trade conditions and guaranteeing the rights of coffee growers and plantation workers, as well as those of socially excluded people, particularly in the South.
