21/09/2011
With regard to results from the 2006-2011 period, UAB comes in first in the field of Agrarian Sciences and second in five other fields: Earth and Environmental Sciences, Economy, Engineering, Medicines and other Social Sciences. It occupies third position in Biological Sciences and Physics. The university is fourth in Spain in the field of Chemistry and fifth in Psychology, Education and Mathematics.
When compared to data gathered from the period 2001-2011, UAB shows to have improved its scientific production in the majority of fields in the past five years.
The ranking is carried out jointly by the Science and Scientific Communication group of the universities of Granada and Navarra, and by the Soft Computing and Intelligent Information Systems group of the University of Granada.
Sources used to carry out the ranking are the Thomson Reuters databases (ISI Web of Science and Journal Citation Reports). Two ample time periods are taken into account, a ten year (2001-2010) and a five year (2006-2010) period, and results are organised by fields and scientific disciplines, allowing information to show in which specialties each university is more active and influential. Final results are then determined with a ranking method synthesising 6 bibliometric indicators, classified into two dimensions: Quantitive [number of citable articles (NDOC), H-Index, and number of citations (NCIT)] and Qualitative[number of citable articles in the best journals (Nº1Q), average of citable articles in journals (%1Q), and percentage of citable documents with large number of citations (TOPCIT)].
Later these two dimensions are synthesised into one index, the IFQ2A-Index (Institutional Qualitative-Quantitative Analysis Index), through which the universities are finally listed in each of the 12 fields and 19 disciplines.
The ranking includes a dynamic portal with multiple functionalities which allows to check each university's profile, changes in position and comparisons with other universities.
