The UAB Governing Council has approved the institution's budget for the year 2024, of almost 409 million euros, which has also been ratified by the Social Council. It is the first budget prepared after the approval of the new Organic Law of the university system, which sets the objective of progressively reaching 1% of GDP in higher education.

In terms of income, as explained in the document of basic criteria also approved by the Governing Council, the contribution of the Government of Catalonia is expected to be similar to that of 2023. The text reminds that the expenses derived from the unique campus structure of the UAB are still not taken into account, which implies an imbalance and "an important challenge when it comes to balancing the budget".

In terms of expenses, among other aspects, the process of increasing and rejuvenating the permanent teaching staff is planned to continue with an increase in the number of lecturing posts and an increase in the number of technification of the staff. And, due to the general increase in prices, the item for service contracts, maintenance and consumables is expected to increase in comparison to the previous year.

Macroeconomic context

The budget was prepared taking into account "a macroeconomic context of resilience of the world economy, notably since the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the full reopening of the Chinese economy after the restrictions to cope with the pandemic". In addition, the European economy "is still in a weak state" but, on the other hand, "inflationary pressures from energy supplies and prices are expected to be left behind".

The budgets are divided into different chapters which reflect in detail every aspect of the expected income (current transfers from public administrations, tuition fees, research funding, etc.) and expenditure (personnel, contracting of services, maintenance, purchase of research materials and tools, etc.). The most important revenue items are current transfers and fees, public prices and other income. On the expenditure side, the most important items are personnel and the purchase of current goods and services.
