Symposium on migrant integration through literature

The research group in children's and youth literature and literary education, GRETEL, organises an international symposium entitled "La literatura que acull: infància, immigració i lectura", which will take place from 17 to 19 November at the UAB Casa Convalescència (Carrer Sant Antoni Maria Claret, 171) in Barcelona. The symposium is recognised by the Department of Education of the Government of Catalonia as a training activity for academic staff.

The aim of the symposium is to present and discuss the latest advances in the research on the didactics of using literature as a mechanism of integrating migrant children, as well as to offer specific teaching resource tools. An analysis of the production of literature for children and youth which deal with migratory processes and which can be especially recommendable for the reception and integration of migrant children will be presented at the symposium, as will the exchange of experiences both inside and outside the classroom.  
 
Guest speakers will include Evelyn Arizpe from the University of Glasgow, who will give a conference on research on inclusive and creative reading communities entitled "Entre imágenes y palabras: la investigación que promueve comunidades lectoras inclusivas y creativas"; Carmen Martínez Roldán from the University of Texas, who will speak on literary debates with bilingual students "Pláticas literarias con estudiantes bilingües. La metodología de estudio de casos"; and Michèle Petit from the University of Paris I; Ana Teberosky from the University of Barcelona; Ignasi Vila from the University of Girona, and authors Njat el Hachmi and Gonzalo Moure.
 
Led by Teresa Colomer, professor of the Department of Language, Literature and Social Sciences Education at the UAB Faculty of Education, the research group GRETEL works on aspects related to teaching activities carried out in reception classes, to the publishing of children's books with representations of a multicultural society, different uses of literature in integration activities, and children's responses when discussing and interpreting illustrated literature.
