More than 300 people participate in the activity organized for the Women in Science Day

Last February 11th, to celebrate Women in Science Day, the Institut de Neurociències and the Unitat de Cultura en Viu de la UAB organized the online screening of the documentary Picture a Scientist. The film tells the story of female scientists who had to face gender discrimination throughout their careers.
We wanted to offer a tool for reflection, both for students and research staff at the University. We are very pleased to say that more than 300 people registered for the event, not only from our institution but also from outside UAB. However, we have to highlight that 87% of them were women.
Some participants wanted to share their impressions and thoughts about the documentary on this virtual wall. We summarize here some of their comments:
“A day has 24 hours for men and for women alike (we all have this clear), the question is how many of these hours can be dedicated to what we want (work, non-work) and how many of these hours are spent on those tasks that supposedly belong to us, as women, or problems that emerge from being a woman”
“Very inspiring, motivating, and empowering! However, from my perspective, the reality is more destructive and devastating in other places of the world! I wish and hope for a day in which, we all keep in mind what is happening in other countries (...) and try to work together”
"Some solutions are just a patch. Why putting a kindergarten on campus increase the number of female scientists? Does this service only benefit women? In the documentary, this is not mentioned, but having children penalizes young female scientists because it implies that their energy and time are devoted to something else. A great documentary that everyone should see ”.
