The UAB was present once again at the Four Years From Now (4YFN) start-up fair that took place from 26 to 29 February as part of the Mobile World Congress of Barcelona (MWC). The UAB stand gave visibility to a representation of spin-offs and technologies emerged from the UAB. These start-ups, created by UAB research staff in sectors such as life sciences, energy and environmental sciences and engineering, attracted the attention of hundreds of congress attendees and visitors.  In addition to the companies, innovative technologies developed by research staff and students of the UAB School of Engineering were also presented.

On 29 February, the last day of the fair, the stand was visited by Javier Lafuente, rector of the UAB; Joaquim Nadal, Minister of Research and Universities of the Government of Catalonia; and Diana Morant, Minister of Science, Innovation and Universities of the Spanish Government.

Twenty years of innovative companies

The UAB is an entrepreneurial university, committed to fostering the entrepreneurial spirit and skills of both its students and researchers. For this reason, Emprèn UAB offeris specialised assessment to all members of the university community interested in developing an entrepreneurial idea or project. It is worth highlighting that the UAB has contributed to launching 31 spin-offs since 2009 with the aim of making use of its research findings, and another 30 were created before the “Regulations for the creation of technology-based companies” was passed. In total, these 61 companies generate more than 1,000 highly qualified workplaces, with more than half of them belonging to the ICT and biotech sector. A total of 80% of these companies have managed to develop a business model that is sustainable in time and 60% of them have achieved international presence and operate in different markets.
