The book is one of the results of the UAB project Gendered- Sports-Fiction It qualitatively analyzes the television series Ted Lasso, The English Game, Las Pelotaris 1926, A League of Their Own, Spinning Out, and Cobra Kai It features a foreword by Stephen Glynn and chapters by Raquel Crisóstomo, Jorge Martínez Lucena, Laura Pousa, Elena Neira, and Anna Tous
The work studies how sports television fiction constructs and reproduces —or questions— female, male, and LGTBIQ+ gender models, focusing on current progress and limitations in terms of representation. Through a qualitative approach, the persistence of stereotypes and traditional roles is detected, as well as the appearance of new forms of discrimination linked to the contemporary audiovisual context. Among the key themes addressed in the volume are false female empowerment, new masculinities, homosociality (positive and negative), misogyny, sorority, camaraderie, as well as classism and social inequalities. The analysis also pays special attention to the representation of fragile female heroines and the revision of classic stories from a female perspective.
With a foreword by Stephen Glynn, professor at De Montfort University (UK) and an expert in the field, the book examines series of great impact and international relevance, selected for their timeliness and influence within the sports genre, such as The Queen’s Gambit (by Jorge Martínez Lucena), Ted Lasso and The English Game (Anna Tous), Las Pelotaris 1926 and A League of Their Own (Raquel Crisóstomo), Spinning Out (Laura Pousa), and Cobra Kai (Elena Neira). These study cases allow for a deeper understanding of the narrative and symbolic dynamics that articulate contemporary television sports fiction. Series deportivas de televisión. Una perspectiva de género is especially aimed at researchers in audiovisual communication, gender studies, and sports studies, as well as university students and people interested in television fiction and current social debates on representation and equality.
