Urban art and theatre offered by Comediants

Comediants

The Comediants theatre company will be offering Urban Performing Arts, one of the 17 courses in English of the UAB Barcelona Summer School, which this year will be offered online, from 22 June to 10 July and from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. Given the situation arising from the current pandemic, "Comediants" proposes rethinking the use of public spaces.

Due to the situation created by the current pandemic, "Comediants" proposes rethinking the use of public spaces: festivals, concerts and exhibitions will continue to be included in urban art? Or will creative freedom be restricted? Which of the pre-existing scenic creations will persist? What new art forms will soon be seen in public spaces?

The main objective of the course offered by the Comediants theatre company is to show participants the tools needed to understand the different aspects of artistic creation and scenic arts in public spaces. Due to the current situation generated by the pandemic, the company proposed rethinking the use of this type of space.

Thus, debates will be held to talk about which events, meetings, festivals, concerts and exhibitions, and art can continue to be created as urban art. Will there be a restriction on creative freedom? Which of the pre-existing scenic creations will persist? What new art forms will soon be seen in public spaces? These are some of the issues that will be worked on in the course.

Urban Performing Arts is a course in which interactivity is very important, and therefore online attendance will be required every day, and participants will have the chance to present a final outdoors artistic project.

The course works on three axes: 1) propaedeutics;  2) process of creating an urban action; and 3) research: analysis of a traditional Catalan festival.

Participants will acquire the tools needed to undestand the different aspects of artistic creations and art in public spaces. The course lasts three weeks and is 100% in English, as almost all other courses of this internationally-focused university summer school.

Lecturers will be made up by Comediants' members Jaume Bernadet Munné and Rita Kuan (Jin Hua). The have actively directed and participated in several of the artistic activities of the Comediants, such as theatre plays, audiovisuals, television, macro performances and special events such as the closing ceremony of the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games. They have also worked on several educational projects that transmit the unique artistic language created by the Comediants, through conferences, international workshops, artistic residencies and street theatre.

Comediants is formed by a variety of actors, musicians and artists who dedicate their lives 100% to creative art. Founded in 1971, all of its creations are based on pagan, traditional, religious and initiation symbols, myths, rituals and ceremonies which celebrate the cyclical passage of humans on Earth. They consider themselves a “theatre of the senses": of colours, smells, emotions and textures, as well as thought provoking artists.

THE UAB BARCELONA SUMMER SCHOOL
This international academic proposal by the UAB began in 2016 with 5 subjects and soeme 50 students. In the second edition, in 2017, there were already more than double the subjects (12) and the number of students had also increased twofold (100). This year the UAB offers 17 subjects, almost all in English, and all will be offered online due to the coronavirus pandemic. This attractive three-week programme includes a variety of subjects, most of them in English, and is a great opportunity for students to advance in their studies by earning from 6 to 12 ECTS credits.

The summer school is open to all international, local and UAB students interested.
