In order to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of student movement in UAB, the audiovisual production ’50 years of Student Movement in UAB’ was screened on May 14 in the Sala d’Actes at the Faculty of Political Science and Sociology. This project was carried out by two students from the Faculty of Communication Studies, produced by the Dinamització Comunitària Unit and promoted by the Vice-Rector for Students and Employability.

The ceremony counted on the presence of some members from the Governing Team and from UAB’s PAS and PDI. The presentation started with a round table moderated by Miquel Domènech, coordinator of the 50 years of UAB celebration. The featured people in the screening took part in this round table; they represented the different generations that belong to the history of the student movement in UAB.

The video counted with the testimonies of Joan Manuel Tresserras, professor from the Department of Media, Communication and Culture; Berta Satoca, student and representative of the Iniciativa Legislativa Popular (ILP) Universitats; José Luis Lalueza, professor of the Department of Basic and Educative Psicology; Núria Alcaraz, pre-doctorate researcher of Sociology, and Xavier Domènech, professor from the Department of Modern and Contemporary History.

During the interventions, the representatives of the first decades insisted that one of the main characteristics of the student movement is that there is no knowledge transfer between generations; it is a cyclical movement that ends up doing the same mistakes. On the other hand, the representatives of the last decades pointed out that this was changing and that there is knowledge transfer between generations now. ILP Universitats could be an example of this, since it’s the result of the fights of previous generations.

The speakers also talked about women’s role within the student movement. All of them agreed on the fact that women have always been part of the student movement but were rather invisibilized – all referents were men. This has also changed in the last years: there are referents now and feminist claims have become part of   the student movement.

After the screening, which was a great success, an open debate with students on the future of student movement took place. The debate, moderated by Sara Moreno, Vice-Rector for Students and Employability, reunited members of student representation bodies and representatives of student unions: Albert Font, representing the Consell d’Estudiants de la UAB (CEUAB); Lucía Aliagas, member of the Associació d’Estudiants Progressistes (AEP); Guillem Rojano, member of the Sindicat d’Estudiants dels Països Catalans (SEPC), and Anna Belén Flamit, representing the Coordinadora d’Assemblees de Facultat (CAF).

You will soon be able to watch the complete video in the 50 Years of UAB website!
