The Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) ranks third among Spanish universities, following the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM) and the University of Barcelona (UB). The ranking classifies the 1,000 best universities in the world. In the international ranking, led by American universities Harvard and Stanford, the UAB occupies place 254. Among the European universities, in which the British universities Cambridge and Oxford top the list, the UAB is ranked as university number 96.

To calculate the position of a university, the CWUR uses the following eight indicators:

1) Quality of education, measured by the number of a university's alumni who have won major international awards, prizes, and medals relative to the university's size. This indicator represents 25% of the final mark.

2) Alumni employment, measured by the number of a university's alumni who currently hold CEO positions at the world's top companies relative to the university's size. This indicator represents 25% of the final mark.

3) Quality of faculty, measured by the number of academics who have won major international awards, prizes, and medals. This indicator represents 25% of the final mark.

4) Scientific publications, measured by the number of research papers appearing in reputable journals. This indicator represents 5% of the final mark.

5) Influence, measured by the number of research papers appearing in highly-influential journals. This indicator represents 5% of the final mark.

6) Citations, measured by the number of highly-cited research papers. This indicator represents 5% of the final mark.

7) International impact, measured by the university's h-Index This indicator represents 5% of the final mark.

8) Patents, measured by the number of international patent filings. This indicator represents 5% of the final mark.

CWUR publishes the only global university ranking which uses these indicators but does not rely on surveys and university data submissions to compile its information. The classification can be consulted at cwur.org.
