This show stems from the casual encounter of two of the actresses with Sergi Belbel in a conference that he was giving: “Hello Sergi, we are eight Mexican girls. We are starting a project…”. To which Belbel replied: “I’m interested!”.  The will of conveying the experience of ‘feeling from here and from there, of belonging to neither’ comes from these eight actresses. All of them studied in the same Performing Arts School in Mexico City and are very excited to share the experience of settling in a new continent. They end up discovering that they enter an indefinite situation: that of those who are from nowhere, foreigners here and there. Mexicatas, written by Sergi Belbel and directed by Antonio Calvo, spans all this with plenty of humor.

“I asked them to improvise, to explain in 20 words what Catalonia means for them, to choose a song that describes Mexico, to tell me all the smells and ingredients that they miss…”, explained the dramatist. Almost 300 pages of ideas, memories and jokes were transformed into a theatre play. Mexicatas is the vision that eight Mexican women have on Catalonia and its idiosyncrasy. The play is definitely a mirror in which we can see ourselves reflected.
