Philologists, technicians and historians analyse the language of science

19/10/2011
Several issues and themes related to the history of scientific language will be discussed during these seminars, such as scientific vocabulary introduced in the 18th century, definitions of poison existing in the 19th century, and the Scientific and Technical Dictionary of the Renaissance era.
The seminars will serve to discuss and debate projects being carried out by the research groups of the Language and Science Thematic Network, made up of 28 research groups from five European countries with a common interest in the history of the language of science and technology. This multidisciplinary meeting will unite a large number of philologists and quite a few technologists and science historians who will share their works and join efforts to surpass the limits of traditional areas of knowledge.
From the Age of Enlightenment to Vocabulary in the Media
All seminars will take place at the conference hall of the Faculty of Philosophy and Arts. The seminar will begin with a welcoming speech by Teresa Cabré, Dean of the Faculty, on 36 October at 4 pm. After which José Luís Peset, researcher at the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), will offer the opening speech entitled "The Origins of Psychiatry: melancholy, moods and passions in the Age of Enlightenment" ("El origen de la psiquiatría: melancolía, humores y pasiones en el Siglo de las Luces").
On 28 October at 11:30 am the closing ceremony will take place with a conference on "Scientific Vocabulary in the Press" ("El vocabulario científico en la prensa") offered by José Ignacio Pérez Pascual, lecturer of the University of A Coruña.
