The UAB Minor in Gender Studies was awarded "for its innovative and pioneering initiaitive within the configuration of an academic offer included at different faculties and aimed at students from all areas of knowledge, providing quality training in gender studies from different disciplines".

The government of the Generalitat awards for the first time within the Jaume Vicens Vives Awards the M. Encarna Sanahuja Yll mention, in recognition of the excellent inclusion of gender perspective into university teaching practices. The award recognises the tasks of faculty members, academic teams and innovative groups in contributing important actions towards the incorporation of gender perspective into the study plans and subjects of academic disciplines.

The mention goes to the Minor in Gender Studies of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), "for its innovative and pioneering initiaitive within the configuration of an academic offer included at different faculties and aimed at students from all areas of knowledge, providing quality training in gender studies from different disciplines".

This distinction highlights the vocation for social transformation and impact of university study plans which have contributed to overcoming a resistance to the gender perspective with academia and have reinforces the option of choosing gender studies, as well as an increase in the number of students from different degrees to gain the skills and knowledge needed to conduct research projects in this area.

The objective of the UAB Minor in Gender Studies, created in the 2012/13 academic year, is to provide basic, cross-curricular and versatile training in different specialisations of the fields of social sciences and the humanities in which the contents are studied from a gender perspective, with special emphasis on the analysis and impact of gender hierarchies and the social and cultural constructions fostering them. Those taking the minor must be undergraduate students studying at the UAB, interested in supplementing their basic training with more specific contents related to gender studies. No previous knowledge on the subjects included in the minor is necessary.

A New Distinction Named After a UAB Professor
In addition to the Minor in Gender Studies, a mention goes to the project entitled "#AmbPerspectiva: Introducció de la perspectiva de gènere en la docència de grau" from the Pompeu Fabra University (UPF).

The M. Encarna Sanahuja Yll mention is an initiative of the Women and Science Committee of the Catalan Interuniversity Council (CIC), which aims to optimise Article 28 of Law 17/2015 of 21 July, on the effective equality between women and men, which confers onto the university a relevant institutional role in educating in values. The Encarna Sanahuja mention carries the name of professor of the UAB Department of Prehistory and leading feminist Encarna Sanahuja, who passed away in 2010.

The projects receiving this mention also receive a cash prize equal to that awarded to the Jaume Vicens Vives Awards in academic innovation and improvement in gender perspectives.

Jaume Vicens Vives Awards
The ceremony for the Jaume Vicens Vives Awards and the M. Encarna Sanahuja Yll Mentions will take place on 6 September, during the inauguration of the new 2019/20 academic year of the Catalan university system.
