La Marató de 3Cat and research, at the Faculty of Biosciences
How is a fundraising programme such as La Marató de 3Cat, that raises money for research projects, work? What does it mean for a researcher to participate in a project that has been created thanks to public donations? These are some of the questions speakers will discuss at the master class of La Marató de 3Cat to be held at the UAB. The class will take place at the Faculty of Biosciences on Wednesday 14 May at 11 a.m. Meteorologist and physicist Gemma Puig will conduct the master class, which will be open to all members of the university community.

After the break caused by the 2020 pandemic, the master classes of La Marató de 3Cat at the University are back. This joint initiative of La Marató de 3Cat Foundation and the UAB aims to inform the university community about the ins and outs of this pioneering international solidarity television programme that raises funds for research projects. The event will take place on Wednesday 14 May at the conference hall of the Faculty of Biosciences. In October there will be another master class on La Marató de 3Cat with other speakers and a different approach at the Faculty of Communication Studies of the UAB.
The event will be hosted by meteorologist and science communicator Gemma Puig, a physics graduate who since 2008 has presented the weather report on 3Cat, Els Matins, 3/24 and Catalunya Ràdio. Also participating will be Javier Lafuente, rector of the UAB; Lluís Bernabé, director of the 3Cat La Marató Foundation; Jordi Duran, scientific advisor to the 3Cat La Marató Foundation; Ester Boix, researcher at the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology; Clàudia Cano, trainee researcher and grant holder in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and Anna Barragán, PTGAS of the UAB who has participated in all editions of the UAB Solidarity Race in support of the 3Cat Marathon. The dean of the Faculty of Biosciences, Isidre Gibert, will also be present.
How does a programme of the size of the 3Cat Marathon work on the inside? How does it become a reference as a source of funding for research excellence in the field of bioscience and health in general? What does it mean for a researcher to launch his or her research project thanks to the combined efforts of donors in the Marathon? These are some of the questions that will be answered by the participants in this master class at the Faculty of Biosciences.
A project of solidarity
La Marató de 3Cat is a solidarity project promoted by Televisió de Catalunya and La Marató de 3Cat Foundation, and focuses on obtaining financial resources for scientific research into diseases that have no definitive care. However, La Marató is more than just raising money; it does an important task in raising awareness among society and the need for giving support to scientific research that aims to prevent and cure them. However, La Marató goes beyond fundraising. For La Marató, raising money is as important as scientific dissemination, awareness and education of society in scientific culture.
