IV International Forum on Feminine Genital Mutilation in The Gambia: knowledge for change

February 6th is the International Day on Zero Tolerance with Feminine Genital Mutilation / Cutting (FGM/C), and in order to commemorate this, Wassu Gambia Kafo and Wassu Foundation of the Autonomous Univrsity of Barcelona have organized the IV International Forum on FGM in The Gambia, with the motto "Knowledge for change". The event will be held in the Coral Beach Hotel in Brufut, on the 5th and 6th of February, and is supported by the Catalan Cooperation Fund to Development, the Government of the Republic of The Gambia, the European Union, UNICEF and UNFPA.

The aim of the organizing entities is, in addition to contributing to the progress of living conditions of women and children and advancing toward gender equality, is creating a critical space of mutual thought, in which the actual situation of FGM/C could be presented, from different points of views.

The forum has been structured in 6 panels in which the followinf topics will be discussed: experiences of health care providers and practice medicalisation; the actual work of civil society organizations; the role of men in FGM prevention; the methodology of domino-effect knowledge transfer, implmented by Wassu Foundation; the FGM in the diaspora, with pannelist from UK, Portugal, Finland and Spain; and finally, legislation on FGM in the human rights frame.

Tal como propone el lema conocimiento para el cambio, se compartirán experiencias que permitan abrir un diálogo entre todos/as los agentes involucrados/as en el diseño e implementación de estrategias para prevenir y abordar las consecuencias de la MGF.

As the motto of the forum suggests (knowledge for change), experiences that facilitate dialog between very agent involved in designing and implementing strategies to prevent and avoid consequences of FGM will be shared.
