"Is AI a threat?", a debate of the Secondary School debate league
“La Intel·ligència Artificial és una amenaça per a la humanitat?” [Is Artificial Intelligence a Threat to Humanity?] This is the theme that will be addressed by the secondary school students' debate league. The local phase held at the UAB will take place at the Theatre Hall from 19 to 23 February and will include the participation of 16 educational centres. The final phase will take place from 17 to 19 April 2024 at the Universitat Jaume I.
The Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona hosts a new edition of the Suma’t al Debat project, an initiative that seeks to promote the effective use of words and the ability to speak in public among students. This project, with an innovative approach to education, offers academic and personal enrichment for participants.
Suma't al Debat is structured into two academic debate competitions where participants must defend positions for or against currently relevant topics. This debate format not only stimulates the construction of solid and coherent arguments, but also promotes critical analysis and collaborative work.
The first of the competitions is aimed at secondary and upper secondary school students, and this year focuses on the theme: "Is artificial intelligence a threat to humanity?" Sixteen schools are participating in the competition. The final phase will take place from 17 to 19 April 2024 at the Universitat Jaume I, after a local phase at the UAB Theatre Hall from 19 to 23 February 2024.
The second competition is oriented towards university students, with the debate focused on: "Should we be tolerant with those who are intolerant?". This competition will be held 26 to 28 February 2024. Teams will compete in at least three debates, with Catalan as the vehicular language. In addition, online training and various resources will be provided for the preparation of participants.
More than a debate: A path to excellence
Participating in Suma't al Debat represents an experience for students that goes beyond learning debate techniques. This project facilitates the development of skills such as non-verbal communication, information search and analysis, and teamwork. In this way, it contributes not only to the academic development, but also to the personal development of students, and prepares them for future professional and personal challenges.
