Conference on sterilising food preparation surfaces in times of COVID-19

José Juan Rodríguez, professor at the Department of Animal and Food Science, gave a conference on the sterilisation of food preparation surfaces on Monday 20 April. the conference was made available on the UAB's YouTube channel. Professor Rodríguez also answered participant questions sent via Twitter with the hashtag #UABrespon.

Although the food industry contains all the tools necessary to face this health crisis from the point of view of food safety, it is advisable to be extra cautious in these moments. This is where cleaning food preparation surfaces is essential.

Professor José Juan Rodríguez, who is also member of the Spanish Food Safety Society and the Catalan Association of Food Science, focused his conference on explaining the risks of the food industry in relation to the coronavirus SARS-CoV 2 and the role hygiene plays to prevent becoming infected, both through the surfaces used to manipulate food and the facilities of food companies.

Throughout his conference he spole on what is known about this virus in relation to food, tips on how to handle food safely, the period of time microorganisms remain on packaging materials and in places used to preserve foods, as well as ways in which surfaces coming in contact with the virus can be sterilised.

The contents of the conferece can be applied to other environments, such as food stores and even within the home.

Before ending his lesson, Professor José Juan Rodríguez answered questions which had been sent through Twitter by viewers using the hashtag #UABrespon.
