"Ciutat de Barcelona" awarded to Joan Fontcuberta

Fontcuberta lectures at the Faculty of Translation and Interpreting, where his classes include German and English translation courses and Catalan for foreigners, on which he wrote his doctoral thesis entitled Vers una metodologia del català segona llengua (1982), on learning Catalan as a foreign language.

His first translations were into Spanish, but due to his close collaboration with the publishing house Edicions 62 and its foundation, he soon began translating into Catalan. He has translated over 70 books, mainly original works in German. Among these are The Death of Virgil (1989) for which he received the National Translation Award in 1991. For years he also worked in the audiovisual field translating scripts for Televisión Española in Catalonia and Televisió de Catalunya. He is author of several articles and has taken part in numerous conferences and debates. One of his most known works is an essay on translation entitled Tots els colors del camaleó (Arola, 2008).

Joan Fontcuberta is the sixth professor at the Faculty of Translation and Interpreting to receive this award since it was first created in 1995. The other members who have received the award are Dolors Cinca (1996), Ramon Lladó (1998), Francesc Parcerisas (2000), Albert Nolla (2005) and Joan Sellent (2006).
