19th edition of the Argó Prizes for secondary school research projects

The 19th Argó Prizes for secondary school research projects were announced on Wednesday 29 June at the Rectorat building of the UAB. Organised by the UAB's Institute for Education Science (ICE), a total of 452 reseach project were submitted this year, and the three best projects from each of the six areas of knowledge were awarded a prize. The purpose of the Argó Prize is to award recognition to the efforts made by students academically and scientifically, and to strengthen the ties between university and secondary school centres.

In this 19th edition of the Argó Prizes for research projects by secondary school students, a total of 452 projects from all over Catalonia were submitted. Attending the awards ceremony, which took place on Wednesday 29 June at the conference hall of the Rectorat building, were the majority of prize winners and their teachers and families. Each of the students receiving first prize in their area of knowledge gave a brief presentation of their research project in front of a full audience.

Of the 452 projects presented, three prizes and four mentions were awarded in each of the six areas of knowledge: science, bioscience and health science, technology, the humanities, social science and the arts.

The criteria taken into account to evaluate the projects were how the subject was approached and how this corresponded to the initial idea, objectives and conclusions; the suitability of information sources and correctly citing theses sources; the capacity to extract data; the ability to summarise and critical thinking; creativity and originality in the creation, structure and presentation of the project and an adequate use of language.

The juy was formed by lecturers from different areas such as Jordi Barbé Garcia, Anna Ortiz Guitart, Daniel Yero Corona and Ramon Vilanova Arbós, and it also include the assessment of specialists from each of the different categories.

Each first prize winner receives free tuition for the first year of any bachelor's degree offered by the UAB, as well as a tablet; second prize winners receive a tablet; and third prize winners receive a hard disk. The students awarded first prize in each of the areas of knowledge who already have free tuition due to graduating with Honours from secondary school will receive free tuition in their second year of their bachelor's degree.
