The UAB promotes language learning as a path to more training, research and socialisation
The UAB offers language courses for international students studying at the UAB so that they can become familiar with the Catalan language, and also for UAB students thinking of studying abroad, to learn the language of the country they will visit. Languages are key to opening the doors of both academic learning and research activities, as well as being able to communicate in everyday life situations and understanding the local culture. The similarity among the different Romance languages also makes it easier for those who speak one of these languages, to quickly learn to speak another one.

On the one hand, the Languages Service — UAB Idiomes offers a wide array of courses in many of the languages spoken in the countries where UAB students go to study abroad. These courses help them improve academically and live the university experience abroad to the fullest. Mastering a new language also contributes to creating more research collaborations and advancing towards a science without borders.
On the other hand, one must not forget that Catalan is the language of Catalonia and is commonly used at university, in addition to Spanish and English. That is why the UAB encourages students from abroad studying at the University to realise that learning Catalan will help them discover the country's culture and society, and be key in meeting other students and understanding their environment. In addition to the courses offered by the UAB (free up to level B1), students can start learning the language before arriving, thanks to online courses offered by Parla.cat and classroom-based 30-hour courses offered in several European cities by the Institut Ramon Llull.
