The UAB to host 3rd Reporters Channel Conference, dedicated to scientific journalism
A total of 122 students from four primary and secondary school centres will visit the UAB Faculty of Communication Studies on Friday 9 May to participate in a school journalism activity, aimed at fostering media education and critical thinking among students. This initiative launched by the Government of Catalonia, entitled Reporters Channel Day, will take place simultaneously in five other Catalan universities, and this year is dedicated to scientific journalsm.

On Friday 9 May more than 780 students from 20 schools located in different parts of Catalonia will visit the learning spaces commonly used by students from six Catalan universities, including the UAB. They will do so to participate in the 3rd Reporters Channel Day, a project launched by the Ministry for Education and Vocational Training (Government of Catalonia) that promotes school journalism.
At the UAB, the day will begin at the Faculty of Communication Studies at 10:00 a.m., simultaneously with the different university campuses participating. Attending the welcoming session to the UAB will be Minister for Education and Vocational Training Ester Niubó Cidoncha, UAB Rector Javier Lafuente, and Communication Studies Dean Juan José Perona. A video on science journalism presented by 3CAT journalist Cori Calero will be screened, and there will be a connection with the other university sites in which the same activity will be taking place.
The 122 students participating in the activity at the UAB come from four schools: Escola Mestre Pla (5th and 6th grade), Institut Joanot Martorell (1st and 2nd ESO), Escola Cervantes (5th grade) and Escola Estel (5th grade).
The students will participate in different practical workshops to learn how radio works, to visit the spaces where audiovisual productions are carried out, to learn how to verify the information they consume, and to develop skills related to safety in the digital world.
The conference aims to highlight the importance of activities aimed at promoting media education and critical thinking and, at the same time, aims to offer teachers and students an experiential learning activity generating spaces that foster, at the same time, individual and joint reflection.
This year the thematic axis of the day will revolve around science journalism, a journalistic discipline that facilitates the transmission of information on science and technology in the media in an understandable way, thus the Reporters Channel Day is added to the proclamation of the year 2025 as the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology by Unesco, commemorating one hundred years since the initial development of quantum mechanics.
Thus, this year the participating primary and secondary school students will act as science journalists, investigating the life and legacy of 30 women who have been references in the history of science in the world.
