The results of a study on the media visibility of female athletes at Paris 2024 are presented at the X AE-IC Congress
The research continues a line of work developed by the team regarding gender and media representation in Olympic sports.
The paper, presented by Luisa Martínez-García, is part of a research project directed by Iliana Ferrer, researcher at the Institut de Recerca de l'Esport (IRE-UAB) and the Olympic Studies Centre (CEO-UAB), focused on analyzing the representation of female athletes within the news coverage of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
The study, focused on RTVE's prime-time television news broadcasted during the Olympic event, aims to evaluate whether the parity in participation achieved at Paris 2024 also translates into a more equitable media coverage and news treatment.
The findings show significant progress compared to previous editions. Female athletes receive greater recognition for their sporting achievements, and a more frequent use of inclusive and respectful language is observed. However, the data also indicates that male presence remains predominant in aspects such as airtime and the relevance granted to news stories.
The research highlights professional inertia that still persists in current journalistic practice, such as infantilization or an emphasis on the emotional aspects of female athletes. It identifies the need to continue promoting actions that allow for a more balanced coverage between women and men.
