Conference by Kayed Hammad on interpreting in Palestine

Kayed Hammad will visit the UAB to offer a conference entitled “Being an Interpreter in Palestine and Fighting Against Oblivion” at the Faculty of Translation and Interpreting, open to the entire university community. In this session he will share his experience as an interpreter, fixer and filmmaker in Palestine, one of the most dangerous and media-exposed areas of recent times.

Hammad has worked for decades with international media in Gaza, where he has become an essential figure for journalists, especially Spanish ones, who report there. He is also one of the protagonists and promoters of the Menú de Gaza project, a series that shows the daily life of his family through the dishes they can prepare in conditions of war and scarcity. This project gave rise to the multimedia chronicle made by the journalist Mikel Ayestaran. In recognition of his career, Kayed Hammad has received the Valores Humanos José Couso & Julio A. Parrado Award, awarded by the Fuentes International Film Festival.

Hammad's life is deeply marked by the conflict: in 2024 he lost his eldest son in a bombing and, after many months trying to leave Gaza, he managed to evacuate with his family in 2025. He currently lives in Spain, from where he continues to collaborate on projects that give visibility to the reality of Gaza and the essential role of interpreters and journalists in war zones.

His conference will be an opportunity to learn first-hand about the situation in Palestine, as well as about the importance of interpreting and journalism in conflict contexts.
